Places (Help with places, streets and buildings in Wigan.)
Hi Peter, I only worked there for seven years. I was a dreadful machinist, completely useless!!. I remember a lot of the people you mention but your memory is uncanny! I cut myself so many times I'm surprised I didn't lose my head. But saying that most of the blokes in the machine shop had lost fingers or something. I remember an incident where a row of drills came down on a chaps arm. Made a terrible mess of his arm as you can imagine. Another lad shaped his thumb the same as the job he was doing. Marshall Hatton was the time and motion chap when I was there. He took loads of stick. Mick Smith was the Shop Steward. I think Mick Lee was the Shop Steward for his section. Not sure who was SS in the Assembly Shop. When I started our canteen was next to the machine shop, then it was above overlooking the front where they used to play football. My first pay cheque was £4.10, take home pay after tax £3. 16 and 7p.
