Places   (Help with places, streets and buildings in Wigan.)

I remember as a boy in the 40s walking through the fields from Whitledge Road to Low Bank Road. Roughly where Elmsbury Street is now, there were some remains of an old building, just a length of the wall with a fireplace. As kids, we used to ask the fireman of the passing steam engines to throw some coal, then we made a fire and roasted potatoes which we acquired from the adjacent fields. I also remember going further, roughly where the motorway is now there used to be a small sewage farm, where I once slipped into one of the pits. Someone still around will remember those green fields.
