My paternal grandfather was a basketmaker in Eccleston in the late 19th century and I suppose into the 20th,he was known as Dicky Quirk.In those days to get to market you walked and he used to carry his baskets to Chorley markets and his name came from the way he "quirked" his load,or something like that,for easier carrying.
