General   (General discussion, talk about anything.)

From memory I think the only pub I went to in Wigan was The Park Hotel near the 'bus station, always good on a Friday night for the jazz club and a good pint.My first experience of cider was at what we would describe as a milkbar,Massa's in Cunliffe Street,Chorley,a favourite haunt on the weekend. The owner, oblivious of the licensing laws, was selling Showerings cider, sweet and dry,to minors,an intoxicating experience. The authorities eventually spotted the mistake so then we had to get our booze from the off-licence.Massa's was absorbed into the Frederick's ice cream business, though all part of the same family, they were rivals in the '40s,'50s and '60s.
