Close to my home, we have lost a lane's worth of carriageway space to provide cycle lanes. Two, that is, in either direction. They are protected space: a series of Hi-Vis posts separates cyclists from motor traffic.

Have not used them myself, as a 'backroad runs parallel to this route, and is much preferable for cycling.

Most cyclists completely ignore the dedicated provision for cyclists: they continue to cycle on the pavement. There have been accidents and injury to pedestrians.
