The PCR test (Polymerase Chain reaction) was invented in 1984 by Kary Mullis who categorically stated that the test does not and should not be used to detect viruses. It detects fragments of DNA and RNA of ANY origin. It is not specific for Covid 19, hence false positives. The process requires 3 heating steps of different temperatures. The polymerase enzyme constructs/builds a longer chain of DNA to identify (by comparison with whatever DNA you have) a match or no match.
Its main use is in forensic medicine, not for hunting viruses.
