When National Service was in force in the UK enlisting could be deferred if you were were in employment as an indentured apprentice or a student.
Similarly in the US students could get deferred, on an annual basis,if they were in full time college education.
President Trump had his draft defered four times whilst at college and Joe Biden five times. Trump's other deferment wasfor medical reasons.
In those days the wealthy well connected families were often able to dodge the draft as in the case of George Bush with his service in the local air force brigade.
