George the School " Poney"

Started by: blackrodweaver (628)

Being a member of Wigan Golf Club and reading up on the history of Arley hall. I found the following

GEORGE. ARLEY HALL. This school pony is buried in the woods by the entrance of Arley Hall. The moated manor house at Red Rock stands in trees on the far bank of the Leeds to Liverpool canal and was built on the site of an early small monastic house. The burial spot of George is marked by a small gravestone on the ground under a large oak tree. The stone is engraved: GEORGE SCHOOL PONY DIED 1825 The horse was used to take children from Adlington, Red Rock, Aspull and Haigh to Red Rock school, Meadow Pit Lane. When the horse died his shoes were nailed at four strategic places around Arley woods.

the actual inscription say George the school "poney" died 1823 aged 42.

does or can any historians of wigan expand on this ie who owned it the hall ,were are the trees with the shoes on, why pony spelt this way.
