Standish pit(s)

Does anyone have any maps relating to the location of the workings etc of pits in Standish? Thanks

I once lived on the Robin Hill estate off Old Pepper Lane and I remember the old landlord of the Globe, Sid, telling me that by 2020 all the houses will have disappeared into a giant mine shaft. I'm glad I moved.

As far as Robin Hills concerned, it was more of scratch in the earths surface ( a day eye) than a giant mine shaft.

Harbour Lane was a deep mine, I was in the old workings there from the 4 feet mine down Standish Hall Drift, when we installed GAS pumps plus two 250 gall Mackleys to clear the old workings..

Hi again Winder. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. One reason i was looking for pit information was from the genealogy side of things. ie my gt gt grandfather downwards for 3 generations were miners in this area - it's one area of the family research I haven't started on yet.
The other reason was to do with buying houses. We looked at a property at the bottom end of Cranleigh overlooking a pond which we were told was linked to the mining in the area. I was just wondering what were the 'pitfalls', if you'll pardon the pun, of buying property in the area. I am originally from Pem, so I know more about that area, but returning to my roots(ish) 35 years after moving away from the North West. Not decided on any area in particular at the moment. Centering our search within a 25 miles radius around Preston.

The pond near Cranleigh was in the area of Victoria Coll, so yes it is close a coal mining site.
I'm not qualified to say which houses you should buy, to be safe from mining subsidence. What I will say is that nearly every part of the Wigan Borough has at one time or another had coal extracted from underground.

The farmers field at the back of my house is like a roller coaster in places, where the underground tunnels used to be.
