....... that, historically, Wigan was a part of Newton le Willows?

No . . and nothing against Newton le Willows . . . but why?

BTW Tonker I'm a Platt Wazzer . . . is that Wigan or what is it? Please, not St Helens

That's not quite correct. Wigan was not part of newton le Willows, but it was in the same manor as Newton le Willows. Being in the same manor did not mean any towns or villages within that manor were part of each other, especially if there was several miles of open countryside between them.

Ah! You mean rather like Pemberton, Ince, Hindley etc., etc., etc., are NOT parts of Wigan, even though they're under the same local government authority?

Er., by the way jono, is this the five minute argument or the full half hour?

and where does St Helens end and Widnes begin. (both are near Wigan by the way if you believe what you read).

To answer your question, I have to say Widnes isn't next to St.Helens.
You see, Widnes is a town in it's own right, under the authority of Halton Borough Council, along with other towns. St.Helens is nothing but an authority area.

St.Helens ends and Halton begins where Sutton ends and Lunts Heath / Farnworth / Cronton begin.

Of course, St,Helens and Widnes are near to Wigan, although I wouldn't like to walk it with a stone in my shoe!

Lizzie, you were born in Billinge Hospital, in Billinge, in the Ince in Makerfield registration subdistrict of Orrell, in the Liverpool ecclesiastical diocese, in Lancashire, in England, in the United Kingdom.

But, the bottom line is, the place you were born in is 'BILLINGE' and it's boundaries have never changed.

You may call yourself Elizabeth. Lizzie for short!

I think I get it. Wigan is a town but it is also an authority. So I am from Platt Bridge, not Wigan, but the authority area of Wigan.

Keeeeeeerchiiiiiiing!

Finally, the penny drops!

Actually, Wigan isn't an authority. Wigan COUNCIL is the authority. It's the government, and the area they have authority over is the Wigan borough.

Now, Pam, sit back and watch how folk get aeriated (sp) when Tonker tells them they aren't Wiganers.

Pedantic, but he don't half get some going.

I really enjoy it.

The arguments he gets about post codes etc.

Folk from Pem are usually the first to bite.

I really do think it's an envy thing with him.

Actually... I look at it the other way. I like watching the Tonk bust his blood vessels telling Wiganers they are not Wiganers. It is like tuning up an 'owd fiddle with him.

For instance... I also come from Platt Bridge and I AM A WIGANER.

I was born in Billinge Hospital as well, I am also a Wiganer. Tonker, who comes from somewhere else, has nothing to do with Wigan

Wigan is a (chartered) Market town listed in the Magna Carta.

yickerville is a dot on the map, somewhere approximately to the south of Wigan, ( colloquially "in the sticks")..

I believe they now have hot & cold running water these days

They also have (black & White)television, believe it or not

BB, St.Helens is an authority area, a 'borough' if you like, whereas Widnes is a town of that name in another 'borough' called Halton.
St.Helens meets with Warrington and Halton, not far from the M62, but it doesn't touch Widnes.

Wigan was a berwick of the Manor of Newton. It is so written, by a pen made out of a feather, in the historical records. It cannot be denied!

And, using 'Wigan Logic', laaaaike, Newton le Willows is in St.Helens, so you're all St.Helensers. It's also in Merseyside, so you're all Scousers an'all !

I were a proud Athertonian(or Benter),then we got put under Wigan Council. Nothing at all wrong with Wigan, but things got done quicker when Leyth,Bent and Bongs had their own Councils, and Wigan could concentrate on Wigan, and not have to stretch their finances to cover extra areas!

"Wigan could concentrate on Wigan, and not have to stretch their finances to cover extra areas!"

Hang on a minute!!!! It's all the 'extra areas' that are stretching their finances to support Wigan, because it certainly can't support itself!

It's about time we returned to Urban District Councils. It would be better for all of us (except Wigan, of course, but who's bothered about that place? )
