Always a favourite.
Hallgate, Wallgate, Standishgate, Millgate, Bishopgate, Churchgate, Stairgate.
And them two others.

Nope. Despite what comes up on google.
There's also one in Bolton. But that doesn't count either.
Neither does this

Modernerism, Eront.
Where's Backwallgate, Pisolivadi?
Is/was it also known as Wldgoose lane?

Your right eron.
Just seen it on street view.

It's an old Wigan chestnut.
Name the Seven.
But there were two more.
One of the threads beneath this at the moment is a clue to one.

You can imagine the Romans making Camp at the top of the Wiend were they could see everything around and they used to practice with their bows and arrows on Longshoot and Hardybutts. And the daft Council built over the remains.

Longshoot is worthy of its own thread Marie.

Ouch!
I'd forgot about that one.
Does it really count?

No its not Willgoose Lane that or was the ( now) blocked off immediate turm right as you walk south under Wallgate Bridge.
I'm pretty sure Backwallgate is one of the alleys near the Clarence / Prince's.
More like called BackSantibag now.

pisolavadi As you say, Willgoose Lane is the first right as you come under Wallgate Bridge. I wonder where that name came from.
Replied: 28th Feb 2013 at 20:44
Know where you mean, Pisolivadi.
Only ever thought of that as Clarence Yard.
There are two other gates previously mentioned on WW.

dostaf Clarence Yard ? Are you going the wrong way under Wallgate Bridge.

I was responding to Pisolivadi's mention, Marie.
Look what I found
I always thought it was Wildgoose for some reason. And, as mentioned on the comments, there was even an iron nameplate on the wall of the building. Coincidentally, I've just mentioned the mill which the lane led to on Great George Street on the Mills of Wallgate thread.
Replied: 28th Feb 2013 at 21:43
dostaf That clears that up then. It was a family name. I wonder why they took the nameplate down off the wall.

Used Willgoose Lane regularly in the 1940's, to get to the A.B.C.minors on a Sat. morning, from my home in York St. East. If you view the section, pubs in Wigan in the 1840's,on Wigan World, it mentions a pub in Wallgate named The Bears Paw, and the landlords' name was William Willgoose. Coincidence, or was it named after him? Re the nameplate, this was in situe up to 2or 3 years ago, and was removed, the same time that the lane was blocked off by the company who presently occupy the building, namely, Tudor Heating.

Dostaf, You're right, I had a look tonight(footnote 1) and the only sign I could see was Clarence Yard.
I'm sure though, I haven't dreamed 'Backwallgate'.
Someone suggested it could be the cobblestone alley down the left side of Wallgate Station , but its not that in my mind's eye... I can see the damn sign there!
A long blocked off passage that I used to think of as 'bank chambers' running from just below the GPO towards the Prince's, maybe?
I don't think it was on the other side.
Annoying the life out of me!
Footnote 1. I was having a pint in the town centre. I didn't go especially, I do have a real life.

Must admit, it does have a ring to it, Pisolivadi.
Worthy of a new thread perhaps.
