Where wiganers of old quenched their thirst

And it wasn't a pub.
A neighbour,in his 80's ,insists there was a drinking water fountain in Wigan town centre.
Trouble is hecant remember where it was so any help would be appreciated

I think Tonker is correct.
I am not 100% sure but if you stood facing the bogs with your back to Woolies the fountain was to the right of the bogs, with the Bleachworks bus stop to the left.
