Cobbled streets with black tar on a hot Summers day...just one
thing comes to mind..childhood memories of yesteryear..
would'nt it be lovely just to go back for one day.

Interestingly I do not know of any 'cobbled streets 'in Wigan or around the NW.
Wigan had sett paved streets, being quarried stone and shaped to size normally a cube,
Cobbles are natural rounded stones usually from river or coastal locations.
Having said all this I was born in a cobbled street in Wigan and always referred to it as such.

Some streets will soon be cobbled again, as the road surface is wearing out in several places, exposing the cobbles below.

Cobbled roads might not be a bad idea, as it would make sure people stick to the 20 mph speed limits, which are currently totally ignored round here (Swinley area).

Half of Violet Street, in Ashton, is cobbled.
There's still a few cobbled roads in the Bolton area. Especially around Halliwell.

You might find these of interest:-

If you collapse side panel and then click on 'Earth' it adds details about more buildings.

If you want to see old maps then this is a good site:-

There are six maps of the appropriate area published between 1849 and 1951.
