1929 Wigan Map Reproduction

Started by: david dunlop (133)

Can anyone advise where I can find a replacement 1929 map of Wigan? The one my Mum had has grown legs and wandered off. She got it from a cousin in the early 1970's and it was folded into a size about 6 x 10 inches, with a white, red and blue cover. It was based on the Ordnance Survey map of the day with all the detailed buildings, bogs and abandoned pits shown. From what I recall, it covered from just North East of the old Crow Orchard Colliery, to just South West of Poolstock. Big open fields just West of the end and to the south of Pagefield Street. We are in Winnipeg, Canada now, so a shop address or website would be a great help.

Cheers,

David

David put Alan Godfrey Maps into your search engine. Select something like Northern Engalnd/ Lancsahire from their list and loads of Wigan area maps are available. They are quick and efficient in despatching too. Good luck.

Thanks for the leads. I now have some research and reading activities to do this weekend. One thing more I recall from Mum's old map was that it was set up as a Street Directory, with a grid overlay and all the streets of the day either on each side of the map or on the reverse side. Made it very easy to look up a street. Wish I could remember more about it, particularly what the heck we did with it!
