Wigan Life Museum
While looking round Wigan yesterday, I came upon the Museum in Library Street, and had a very interesting time in there, the staff are excellent, and very approachable. While speaking with a young lady member of staff, she told me that I could learn about my family history as they had staff to give advice, so I then spent over an hour learning about my grand parents who had lived in the Bryn area, it was surprising what my memory could remember, I came away with copies of the 1911 census showing the members of my family. Rather interestingly, one of the staff actually knew members of my family. I think that I should have put this in the genealogy section.

You're right Robin, it's well worth a visit. Unfortunately most Wiganers have never set foot in the place. And like the Pier before it, it will probably wither and die

It would be so sad to see it go as I to have visited there and found it so interesting and the staff so lovely and very helpful, Nothing seemed to be too much trouble

Seems a fact of life that a lot of Wiganer's never use the facilities around the townHow many visited the Way we where/Trencherfield Mill site when it was open or have never visited Haigh Hall and groundsit must be 10/15yrs ago since I went up there(except for a wedding reception).Like you say Robin once went into the old history shop before it changed its name and was revamped how many years ago was that?

Tonker's inferiority complex is showing. Just cos Haydock's not got a museum - or much of a past apart from Mrs Lyon the undertaker.

Why bring Haydock into it? The fact that Haydock hasn't got a museum is irrelevant.
But, whilst you brought it up ........ has Wigan got a racecourse? has Wigan got as many hotels? has Wigan got as many business / industrial parks? is the transport-hub of the north-west in Wigan? has Wigan got as much coal-mining history?
Of course it hasn't! But, hey, you made the comparison!
And St.Helens has a museum which is far better than Wigan's attempt. The staff don't tell lies. They don't need to!
