First thought was the workhouse.

Wasn't there a 'Lunatic asylum' (horrible term) in Newton-Le-Willows. I don't mean Winwick.

I think Tonker may have posted about one, where people were sent to from alll over the place.

Dustaf, Haydock lodge was, as the name implies, in Haydock, not in Newton-Le-Willows.

My gt gt gt grandfather, who lived in Standishgate was committed to Denbigh asylum (North wales) in 1871, followed by A stint in Prestwich asylum in 1872, then the county asylum in Lancaster in March 1874 (where he remained until his death in June 1896). i'm sure that if there had been an asylum in wigan he would have been sent there?

Thanks Carol....Reason I asked this question, I am reading a series of fiction books The railway Detective by Edward Marston based in the 1850's and In a few of them the villan was either hanged or sent to the local Asylum. There certainly seems to have been a great many of them

Not an asylum but Near Newton station was Red Bank School, I believe it was 'Approved'.

Just found this about a looney bin, which was called Whittingham Lunatic Asylum and the article mentions other Lancashire Lunatic Asylums and Wigan used to be in Lancashire

I've been in Whittingham, Calderstones, Rainford, Winwick & Park, to name a few.

My cousin lives on the Winwick hospital site, right across from Anouk Pascale!
