Just been thinking, whilst reading about tow bars.

Was there ever one in Wigan?

Ther was a mention of one in a daft programme called the 'Alan Ladd Momorial Heel Bar'. (Bar not prog)

Possibly a Vic Reeves thing.

Google tells me 'The Alan Ladd Memorial Heel Bar' did feature in a Reeves and Mortimer show.

Wasn't aware about the wrangling which followed.

Channel 4 have claimed to have liked The Weekenders and said they would have been willing to let Reeves and Mortimer do a full series, in exchange for a third series of Vic Reeves Big Night Out. However, Reeves and Mortimer were not willing to do another series, having performed the show on stage and on television for five years. As neither side was willing to compromise, a series was never commissioned. This rejection is considered to be one of the main factors for Reeves and Mortimer moving to the BBC, where they went onto create The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer in 1993, followed by Shooting Stars and Bang Bang, It's Reeves and Mortimer

Anyhap, not that I owe them owt, or want to be accused of advertin; but that shop in Hallgate (Rickards), deserve a mention.

I've looked for photos of Rickards, in the Victorian Quarter, but to no avail.

Belting place, but I think the shop is a modern addition.

I mentioned earlier ^^^^^ the cobblers' automatons.

During the time of the introduction of the Poll Tax, the little chap went missing from Hallgate.

Mr Shryhane wrote a few lines about it in his Wigan World column in the Wigan Observer.

Some bright spark (not I) wrote to the paper suggesting the little fellow had been taken away for non payment.

That rumour should have been knocked on the head immediately!
The little fellow was a model citizen with only a sole tack, not the poll tax, within his remit.

Great memories of Sharrock's shoe shop, as kids we used to get our shoes from there. In those days you could choose the footwear, take them home and pay weekly (or when your parents could afford ) until the items were paid for. No Visa cards in those days eh!!!!! Also in the back of the shop Mr Sharrock made clogs to order, he also did shoe repairs.When we used to take repairs to him he would allow us to watch him work on them, as a kid at that time the machinery in his shop was quite fascinating!'
