If successful, Roger would follow in the footsteps of H'Angus the Monkey, the football mascot elected as Mayor of Hartlepool in 2002 with the slogan 'Free bananas for schoolchildren'. Initially written off as a joke candidate, H'Angus - really Stuart Drummond -has since been re-elected twice setting a precedent which the Knight Warrior seeks to follow on 3 May.

I saw something about him. The electorate turned nasty when he started being himself, rather than the monkey.

Thy said they'd voted a for the monkey and wanted a monkey. Not a serious chap.

I thought you'd be of the opinion of 'Better ten monkeys hung, than one F*****mon set free'.

The thread reminded me of a Simpson's episode, where Homer beomes Mayor and they give him a chequebook and a rubber stamp with which to sign cheques. He subsequently bankrupts the town and is seen crying 'but they gave me a rubber stamp, a RUBBER STAMP!
