upon perusing todays Daily Mirror. I was most surprised to see a full page on Thatcher, she was being taken out for an airing in the park with her carer ,I believe that the mirror should just be ignoring this evil old bag. she appears to have turned into a shambling old wreck now ,I wish that bloody dog she was stroking had taken a chunk out of her bloody arm. Although I come from a coalmining family and lived through the strike, I never really understood the Thatcher/Scargill thing that was going on. I've just been reading through loads of stuff and have come to the conclusion that as much as Thatcher was to blame for the demise of the working classes, Scargill did the miners no favours by calling a strike without a ballot which led to a division within the miners and mining communities, and weakened their position against Thatcher. Have I understood this correctly? This isn't a political argument, just trying to understand what went on.....

Mrs.Thatcher is blamed by many for policies which were the result of the of the EU single market creation in 1968.
The founding fathers, zealots more likely, of the single market set out to create a customs free zone across the EU to be followed by tax harmonisation and the end of monopoly providers. The latter prompted the sell off of the UK utilities for which Mrs Thatcher is considered by many to be the arch villain

Yes Scargill cocked up not calling for a ballot but even if he had called a ballot i reckon he would have comfortably got the o.k. to call a strike but the miners would not have been united, there would have still been scabs, espescially in Notts. They wouldn't have come out no matter what the vote. P.S. I was never a Thatcherite but still think pewapp's original post is bang out of order.

utt I have never voted Tory in my life and never will but the FACT remains, the coal industry was doomed even if Labour had stayed in power they would have phased out the mines, maybe not as quickly as Thatcher did it, but they would have done it. With regard to this shower that are in power right now i totally agree with you, they would see the workers doffing caps again, and they will surely try and dismantle the NHS, who was it that said we are living in a classless society? I hate Margaret Thatcher with a vengence, evil horrible woman and a tory to boot,she couldn't give a fig about the working class so why is everyone sticking up for her, yes she let people buy their council houses but why was that, so that when they were old or infirm and needed to go into a care home they could sell their houses and pay for their own care, very devious

Sorry to blow a hole in your theory but the sale of council houses, which started long before Mrs. Thatcher,was a means of reducing government debt. In a previous post i catalogued the economic case from 1950 on.
The Americans crucified the UK at the end of WW 2 with the onerous terms on the loans which we needed to rescue the country from a near bankrupt state.
Successive governments kept on borrowing until the IMF bailed the UK out in the 1976 with conditions which included the sell off of state owned assets.
Since the early 70's the Treasury has looked at selling off anything with value and whichever party was in power at the time the sales would have gone ahead.
The general understanding of national events is not helped by the duplicity of politicians of all colours.
Today's issue of Private Eye carries an expose of Andy Burnham highlighting his authorisation of aspects of the NHS whilst he was Health Minister. Now he condemns the same thing.

From all the information available, it was concluded that the carrier and the Belgrano group were engaged in a classic pincer movement against the Task Force.It was therefore decided that British forces should be able to attack any Argentine naval vessel on the same basis as agreed previously for the carrier.

It was proven beyond doubt that the Belgrano was heading for the Falklands and not returning to it's home base. Major David Thorp, of our secret signals interception section proved this, as it was he and other Govt agencies that intercepted the Argentine naval communications in late April 1982 ordering the Belgrano and it's escorts to a grid reference within the exclusion zone. It was sank by two torpedoes from HMS Conqueror, a hunter killer sub of her Majesties RN. Well done that crew! The Belgrano 'was outside' the exclusion zone at the time of sinking but she was on a war footing. In recent years the Argentine navy has accepted that the sinking of the Belgrano was a legitimate act of war. When the British lion roars the world knows of it!
