Passwords

Started by: priscus (inactive)

These are getting beyond a joke!

I have just counted up, and 46 damned passwords I am supposed to remember!

That is far too many.

Some years back, I started to use a scheme whereby the password describes what it is, but in a way not likely to be discerned by anyone else. (Translate the characters like they do in LEET, but a much less obvious set of substitutions, the basis of which I have never shared with anyone.)

But 46 different passwords is proving too much, even with this technique: the ones which get little use are beginning to elude me.

Have experimented using the same password for trivial cases where data security is not an issue, but the AVAST security nags me because it has found repeated passwords!

It also seems to access the data from password managers (apps). So I am reluctant to use them if they are subject to a breach that could reveal all passwords to an intruder. Perhaps I need to do more research on safety of password managers.

Hey Ho.

Found one review state password manager is " like leaving your keys under your PC's doormat"!

and another: "No safer than storing your passwords in a text file"!

Priscus, I use a password manager on my desktop, have for years, no problems. iPad, I use the inbuilt one, needs a finger scan to confirm the passwords. I don't use either for my bank account, so that's the only one I need to remember.
