Bonfire Night

back in my youth of the 50's and early 60's we collected weeks in advance sofa, dressing tables cabinets etc, made a guy fawkes and sat outside the gerrard arms made a fortune. were has it gone.... not seen a bommy or guy fawkes for years.

You don't see bonfires now apart from comunity ones at orgainsed events. I have seen children doing penny for the guy for donkeys years. I think it's because kids now have so much for the asking they have no incentive to make the effort - and parents molly coddle too much to let them do it

I wish that they would ban fireworks except for organised events. A lot of modern fireworks are glorified bombs and can be dangerous. Pet owners and the elderly hate themHas to bonfires there has not been one on Whitledge Green for about 5 years but if you look at the photos on this site with all the mess the locals are glad.

Wouldn't be allowed today of course owing to Elf 'n Safety, but when I was a kid back in the fifties we had a bonfire in our back garden, having collected for it for weeks. Then my mum and neighbours made parkin, treacle toffee, and stuck a few potatoes in the bonfire. I can still taste 'em!

Seems to be the kids who have quit these activities.

Still find the occasional bommy in my neck of the woods, but tiz adults, not kids who have organised them. Much more formal. Nearest to me was admission by ticket! (Won't continue as site now redeveloped)

Fireworks: seem to be let off throughout the year now, but over next week, I expect they will be waking us all at times such as 3-00am. I guess youths rather than kids. No doubt the kids will torch a few cars to add to the festivities.

City has a formal fireworks display. I have seen roof fires caused by its production of falling burning debris! Also at least one injury to their presumably trained operatives.

Fireworks do make me uncomfortable. I guess many who have been under fire will feel the same.

my neighbour was setting them off last Saturday - loud banging and screaming ones - just awful!

Hands up those amongst us that didn't let off fireworks before the 5th. Mind you they weren't the mini bombs they are now. The sale of fireworks is banned in Canada except to those doing organized displays. Obviously the 5th means nothing here.

Every gang had their own their own bommie in the 50/60s and would collect stuff for weeks before 5th of November.We lived near the tip in Hindley so never had a shortage of stuff to collect.We used to raid other bommies and pinch their stuff.Fireworks were sold in most corner shops,penny bangers.2p cannons,Jack jumpers,Roman candles,cascades,spinning wheels(usually ruined the fence),3d sky rockets ,little demons etc.Used to put our Guy outside the Strangeways pub and collect money.It was near the station and the men who got off the train from Irlam steel works usually told us to bugger off.(who could blame them after their shift) Happy days or rose coloured glasses

Diwali in 2018 will start on Tuesday, the 6th of November and will continue for 5 days until Saturday, the 10th of November.

Came out of Tesco today in Atherton and some kids were asking for a penny for the Guy which they had in pram.I had no cash on me,I felt so guilty.

Petition on line to try to ban fireworks for general sale SIGNED. It sounds like a war zone out there and this is the 6 th night of fireworks going off

I do agree about the sale of fireworks and there should only be organised displays in designated areas at certain times.

The big bad ones are banned in Florida apart from Organised displays.. It doesn't stop some people going into neighboring States to buy there..
