Re-usable Bags

How Much are they when You buy them in the shop, 20p-30p each, Recently saw 5 of these bags in a waste bin filled with stuff.

Bag for life is 10p in Tesco. Don't last very long, but they freely replace them when holed. I think similar price at tuthers. Just happened to have Tesco till receipt to hand.

We just seem to be a wasteful society, Not caring about our environment.

What annoys me is that we are expected to purchase clothes without bags. I'm happy enough not to use plastic bags but why can't paper ones be made available instead? they can be recycled easy enough without the risks to the environment.

Plastic waste at Asda. You buy pre-sealed meat and at the check out it is then put into another plastic bag I bought 2 cloth shopping bags from Aldi a few years ago and they are still going strong

Re-useable plastic bags are 5p at Aldi.

In fact, before all this plastic carrier bag bullshit, ALL plastic carrier bags were re-useable!

Have you noticed how the supermarkets, that once gave free re-useable carrier bags, now charge for them although they don't have to?

Yes, the free provision of carrier bags was very convenient.

But the cost, in terms of environmental damage caused by discarded carrier bags, I guess outweighs this.

The 'bag for life' does last longer than did the free carriers, though not by much. They probably (depending on weight and shape of what you put in them) provide for about ten shopping events before splitting/holing/handles failing.

As they get returned to the shop, in exchange for replacement, it does remove them from the stream of 'discards'.

I saw so many plastic bags snagged in trees following the recent winds, that I think there is still a long way to go.

Actually, Peter, that's what they want you to believe!

The government ruling states : "single-use carrier bags which have a thickness of less than 70 microns."

If you noticed, most carrier bags had "please re-use me" printed on them. This meant that they were not covered by the legislation.
However, notices went up in all supermarkets, saying thet they were charging for carrier bags 'because the government says they have to', when actually the government had nothing to do with it!
