I've often wondered whether those boil in the bag "fillets" really are kippers

I gather many of today's kippers never seen a smokehouse: pickled in brine, then dyed.

More likely that the salt will be the death of you than the bones.

Back in 1960's, when I was a student, I usually worked Christmas Post parcel sorting. Lots of Manx Kippers used to get sent through the post, just with address label attached. You could not do that now: the fish would just fall apart!

Manx kippers always reminded me of old dried up wash leathers.

I know what you mean with cost of postage being more than the price of the fish - so probably best to stick with the Finnan Haddie from Morrisons.

Does Darren's fish van still go to Standish on Fridays, maybe he has or can get smoked Haddock, I've only ever got Mackerel from his van at Eccleston on a Thursday though, but I know you have to get there early to catch the best, whenever I've got there only the runts of the shoal were left.

Jimmy Gillet was the fish man...... It was a long time ago, maybe I am wrong or am I?

I don't know when his horse and fish cart ceased, (Ashton) but was there in 1960's, and when I visited someone there in 1980's, it was the last time that I bought my fish from him and his vehicle.

Let's hope he's enjoying retirement and he's not in another plaice

I attended a Fish Fry Fundraiser this past weekend.. Not kippers, but Mullet. Good grief, I was scared to put any of it in my mouth, so many bones, then I picked up what I thought was fish, well I guess it was, only it was the tail fin.. All in all I maybe got four or five bites of the actual meat..
The Fundraiser was for a good cause, so I didn't complain..

Sorry to hear Bob has gone but he's not forgotten. I like the sound of that Irish comedy. I wonder whether it ever materialised .

This must have been taken from just about outside the house where we lived on Wigan Rd until 1959. Would love to see a picture of that row of houses if one exists. It was known affectionately to my parents' generation as "finny 'addy row" because the many Irish immigrants there liked their Finnan Haddock on Fridays.

At the time of his death, he had been attempting to complete a TV comedy started by himself and the late Bolton comedian Hovis Presley ... Sadly, this remains unfinished. (Link)
