What’s your favourite Wembley rugby moment?

Started by: wigvet (3548)

Mine must be the final whistle at the 85 final having witnessed an incredible game – relief all round as Hull were finishing the stronger side

Best non Wigan moment was David Hobbs second try in 1983 as we watched Featherstone Rovers, as underdogs, beat Hull 14-12

wigvet loads of great memories from the '85 final including fergie's 2nd try. Main memory from '84 was the day after, about two hundred Wiganers around the St James's Tavern off Piccadilly. Chucking out time was 2.00pm and the Salvation Army band was playing outside, at roughly 2.15pm they started to march off along Regent St followed by the said 200 Wiganers. Flanked by a couple of bobbies who were having a laugh with us all, we paraded up to Oxford Circus and then all got the tube back to Euston. Brilliant

groucho- just watched the 1965 video - thanks - 'theyll not catch this fellow' - priceless

rio - was there with you at St James (which was always our Sunday afternoon place, before we found the Cock Tavern) and I remember a load of Japanese tourists taking photos of what they perceived as an English custom

Murphy said he was watching Ferguson coming out of the "tunnil" for the second half, and he was "carrying a leg" next thing you know he's gone half the length of the field

groucho

My favourite as well...Trevor Lake's try in the corner

Sarries beating Northampton Saints 19-16, Sept 2009.

Nil-ing Saints in '89 takes some beating.

Killing time before opening one saturday morning , ambling round the City, takin' in the sights and one of the lads turnin' to me sayin' that's a bonny town hall , Billy , eh?
...'Yeh , St Paul's Cathedral, Mossy.'

Another popular watering hole that was frequented by one or two Wiganers on the Wembley trips was the Lion and Lamb. Only five minutes from Euston, not sure if it's still there or not. May have gone to make way for the new British Library, I know they knocked down the Eliza Doolittle for said building
Think the Rising Sun on Euston Rd is still open, a few pints were supped in there as well before the obligatory game of tick and pass, while waiting for the train

Brynkiwi
I can vaguely remember a try-saving tackle from that game, but not the actual players involved.I do remember, however, walking down Library Street in the summer of that year, and seeing the Challenge Cup on display in Timberlakes' showroom.I actually went in and had the pleasure of seeing it close up and handling it.Did anyone else have that same experience ?
The first final i attended was 1970 against Castleford when Colin Tyrer was viciously assaulted in broad daylight by one Keith Hepworth.

Groucho - that would be 1958 - Will be enshrined in Wigan rugby history for the covering tackle Norman Cherrington made in the Challenge Cup Final of 1958 when Wigan beat Workington by 13 points to 9. The Workington winger looked certain to score in the corner when out of nowhere came the covering second row giant that was Norman Cherrington to bundle the winger into touch and save the day for Wigan

I reckon the Shaun Edwards try saving tackle on Lee Crooks in the '85 final against Hull takes some beating, how he stopped a 17st Crooks was amazing, considering a 17 year old Shaun had been named at full back to replace the injured Steve Hampson, stopping Crooks on the line,"try saver".

For anyone who's interested, Saturday's final is available to watch on the BBC iplayer until next Saturday.

Challenge Cup Final 2011

In my opinion, Clare Balding is an excellent television presenter, and she certainly seems to have a genuine interest in rugby league.
