Latics players give one million pounds to charity.

Started by: jay_1 (14715)

'Wigan Athletic players have proved beyond all possible doubt that their hearts, as well as their pay packets, are in the very soul of Wigan. The whole squad have donated one million pounds of their 'staying up' bonus towards the building and upkeep of the proposed Wigan Boys and Girls Club.

The club is the brainchild of Latics chairman Dave Whelan who says he was set up in life by his experiences at a forerunner of the club. The proceeds of his autobiography 'Playing To Win" have been ploughed into the scheme and together with Martin and Bill Ainscough – he has already donated over half of the £6.5m development costs.

Designed by the Liverpool architects Austin-Smith:Lord, the youth centre will feature recreational facilities, sport, music and art studios, a climbing wall, all-weather pitches and improved public spaces.

The facility is badly needed in the Wigan area and this gesture by the players of Wigan Athletic FC will go a long way into making their chairman's dream a reality.

In these days of what people perceive as 'greed' with regards to players who play for top flight clubs it is uplifting for the people of Wigan to realise that Latics are not only paying lip service to their mantra of being a true 'Community Club'.'

A magnificent gesture by the Latics players, one we can all applaud.

It works out at about 2 weeks wages.

I wonder if the players will get a bonus, when the building is turned into flats.

There's no publicity about this in the National Press, only Joey b***** Barton. They didn't have to give it and I am a Warriors season ticket holder. Well done lads.

It's made the nationals today,mswigan.

Some great quotes from Mr Whelan about being made 'speechless' by the Latics players generosity.

Well done to all the players involved.

fp..how have the players not given any money when they have giving up their bonus? If my bonus from work was £1000 and i decided to let my company give that to the company charity, you're arguing that i wouldn't have given any money?!

Altyough I am a Warriors supporter, I applaud a great gesture by the Latic's players in donating money towards the building of a first class facility for the young people of Wigan.

Well done!

Looking forward to the opening.

i think the ideas great and many generous donations.the siting of the club is awful ,seems to be something smelly under the floorboards, plenty of space oppo whelans footy centre doing nowt, why the last greenfield site in wigan town centre.in a borough of this size how bigs the club going to be to accomodate 10% of the youth of this area.political hocus pocus
