Darts, Dominoes and Pool.

Started by: rio caroni (5077)

What is the situation around Wigan and District regarding Sports Sections. At least fifty percent of the pubs that the Crooked Wheel used to play against are now either boarded up or Bulldozed. I know the last few times I have ventured into a pub mid-week the majority are like Ghost towns, compared to twenty years ago when the leagues flourished. Pubs which where packed out on sports night now seem to be a rarity, is it that the younger folk have now found other ways to pass a Monday or Thursday night on

Those days have gone Rio.

The summer pool league folded this year through lack of teams.

I was talking to the stewardess of a local social club who was saying the place would be gone in 5/10 years, cos when the members die off there is nobody to replace them.

People goto gyms and communicate on social network sites these days.A pub needs to sell decent food to stand a good chance of making a profit.

This is actully something i have thought quite a bit about.

Could the real reason be that 20years ago we were still stuck with four channels and 'sky tv' that was full of foreign language channels from memory and the pub was the best 'entertainment' option.Plus to catch up with someone you had to physically meet them.

Now it's a poor second to the internet,1000's of channels and games stations whose games look like real films.

Also of course it was easy to getting in the habit of going to the pub 20 years when you were 14/15/16/17.Now if one of your friends is under 18,you'll have to leave him behind of settle for a couple of 'sneaky' drink in the house or the park.

Throw in the price, the smoking ban and people being more health concious.I guess there is a whole list of factors behind the decline of the traditional pub.

those days have NOT gone Rio

there is still a thriving darts/doms league in the Springfield area and also the Scholes & District League, which encompasses teams in Platt Bridge & Ince and starts again for the season next Monday night
Mondays nights can be quite lively!!

and Jay if you want to see a decent pub which does not have to sell food to make a profit, come into Sams Bar Scholes tomorrow night to watch your 'beloved' Warriors take on Hull - I will even buy you a pint....don't think Kenny will though!

Wigvet live sport is different.

If you don't think those days have gone compare the number of teams in the league to the numbers 10 or 20 years ago.

Deluded to argue otherwise i'd say..

The stats just don't back it up..

Thanks for the offer but i've always found the 'decor' in Sams bar against my taste.

Just driving on the road through Abram to Hindley today for the first time in ages.I noticed the King Billy now seems to be a chinese, the Railway is up for sale(wasn't open may open on a night?),the Strangeways seems to be converted to flats?,the other small pub whose name i can't recall on the left is now also a chinese.

That's just a small stretch of road!Platt Bridge to Hindley certainly didn't seem to be thriving to me!

Jay!
‘If you don't think those days have gone compare the number of teams in the league to the numbers 10 or 20 years ago’

16 teams in the Scholes league as there was 20 years ago Jay and I have played in every year since
http://www.samsbar.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/page3.html

and never judge a pub on its ‘decor’ – judge it on decent ale, friendly company and ‘sky sports’!
My offer of a pint still stands – if you decide to come how will I recognise you?????????

Which local social club? I would love to know! because ALL the members must be 70 plus for it to be gone in 5/10 years.[:

Another jackonory tale methinks.
