Why hasn't it gripped the nation?

It's on sky sports and occasionally on the BBC but why doesn't it grip the sporting nation. Why isn't there a Birmingham Bears team or Glasgow Gladiators? If the game is really that great, surely teams would have popped up everywhere.

What is RL's problem and how can RL fanatics like myself and a few others on here help to solve it?

This is a serious debate,so please no digs or taking it off topic.

to get national recognition on a scale jay is asking for you need good media coverage everyday. ie. rugby league does very well in aus.football although in closed season still has plenty pages in the papers. my own paper the mail very rarily mentions league, but gives a good r union coverage.sky tv on live league games says it has a massive audience, but you only get the result on local tv. and no press discussion after match.its always been mainly a northern sport and i cant see it changing really.

You have to remember that rugby league was origonally a breakaway sport played by northern working class rebels who had the audacity to disobay the establishment and ask for a share of the rugby union's money to compensate them when they had to miss work in order to play rugby. This led to the sport being suppressed, outlawed, and discriminated against for over a hundred years. When you consider the discrimination experiensed by the sport and it's players it's amazing that the game survived at all, never mind expanded.

Who cares as long as those like myself, prefer to watch what they consider to be a more entertaining and exciting game then the now overated game of football which now is being ruined by corupt rich people who only see it as money making business.

And does well considering the descrimination that stills exsist's in the establishment controlled media.

Rugby League is a wide based sport but not on a professional basis, many sports are the same ,tennis ,cricket, union.
These sports have a small number of professionals but a great many amature players.

I do still support Bolton Wanderers, but since I came to live in Wigan in the late sixties, my first love became Rugby League and Wigan Warriors for the reasons, I have areaady stated.

And by the way, there is a worse team in the Premiership, but I wll not mention it's name or you will get nasty!

The popularity of any sport is complicated, especially if you are trying to convince others who prefer another sport

It needs to be exciting, entertaining for starters. RL has, in my opinion, got those attributes, but many of my friends (down here in Lincolnshire), don't like any form of rugby. Football and dyke jumping are the popular sports.

In the past RL has suffered massively at the hands of the media and establishment.

The papers and television have never supported RL as much as union. Union is played at toff level and is considered the game for gents to get involved in. It's hierachy detest RL, but admire some it's finer points so much they introduced some (sin bin for one)

The armed forces would until a few years ago, refused to have RL played on their bases.

As RL fans, most of us are not fussed about how popular it is compared to other sports, but given a fair crack of the whip, it would take off.

I think my highlight of RL was when the dual code matches with Bath took place. Interesting games, but to hear Dr Jeremy "pretty face" Guscott roll out excuse after excuse as to why he wouldn't play.....he knew he would have known what contact sport was all about after playing Wigan.

And those matches against Bath: Wigan thrashed them at league, and drew the second half at Union. Wigan also won the Union 7's. Bugger all in the press as I remember - but if Union had done the same at league, we would not have heard the last of it. The power of the media........

I take your points on board Jono but lets look at the example of Quins/Fulham/London Broncos.

At one time, one of the most successful business men in Briton(Branson) owned them, even he couldn't get the team to take off!Their matches are still regularly covered on BBC radio in London but they find it impossible to attract decent crowds.I don't understand why?I don't understand why in South Manchester just a few miles from Warrington that nobody in a pub will even look at the screen when theres a big RL match on.And they only allow you to watch,if there is absolutely no other sport on TV.

I tend to think that RL diehards seem to think they are some sort of victim of a media conspiracy.A favourite phrase i've read on various message boards is 'we would be the number one sport in the country if we had wendy balls coverage'.

I don't know the answers,i just find it odd.How you can have a comparitive RL 'hotbed' in Warrington and no interest a few miles down the road.

You answered your own question with the quote "we would be the number one sport in the country if we had wendy balls coverage"

If you took football coverage down to that of RL and RL to that of football, then you would see a rise in its popularity. That goes for any sport.

Football is the number 1 sport in this country, and the press will swarm over anything to do with it, both on and off the pitch.

Manchester has two of the biggest clubs in the world. No other sport can compete with that.

I think RL is a victim of media conspiracy. The Sunday Times, after a big Union match would have two broadsheet pages devoted to the match. There would be diagrams of a particular move, player ratings, and lots of type.
The same paper would hardly print anything about a Challenge Cup Final - usually just a column and a photo. The national papers anywhere apart from the North have bugger all RL news, yet have Union and football news on several pages.

As for London RL - getting across that damned city is a nightmare. The club has very few roots in a city with 14 professional clubs. The club are getting thrashed at the moment and the fans are fickle.

But take a look at Les catalans.....big support down there and the French love their league. Not always the case, as RL was banned by the Vichy Government, and although the ban was lifted in 1947, the game of RL in France was not permitted to use the word "Rugby" in its title. This was only changed as recently as 1991.

Proof indeed that RL is a victim of the establishment. Where else would you get that treatment, and why would the armed forces of this country actively discriminate against RL by prohibiting the game being played?

Chicken and egg. They get the coverage because of the popularity.

RL failed as a game somewhere along.RL has been around long enough to have took off and dominated or at least competed as a second sport to football but it's failed.I'm not quite sure where.

Replied: 20th Jul 2011 at 23:25

I don't think RL has failed as a game. The game ie what happens on the pitch is great. The players at the top end of the game are some of the fittest sportsmen in any sport.

The working class image has stuck with the game. RL came about from a class struggle. It has remained there and will remain there as long as it is treated as a second class sport.

The media (BBC) made sure it never got popular by having terrible commentators. Eddie Waring loved RL, but his manner and accent did not endure the game to southern population. Ray French didn't help either. Both knowledgeable guys, but they never got through to the uneducated in t'south!
There is still a north / south divide in this country in many aspects, with sport being one of them. (although lots of Man Utd fans live down in the south

Although it is never spoken about much down south, I still smile when I ask folk "what is Wigan famous for?"

"Rugby League" is normally the answer.

Lets hope the CC this weekend will encourage more to watch this game.

Jay - I've yet to be convinced that you're a RL fanatic !

A fanatic is someone who has a belief or behavior involving uncritical zeal. You may like the game, but you are very, very critical of Wigan RL.

RD,stop talking your usual negative nonsense.

Jono,i've friends from all over the country and the vast majority of them would fail to name one Wigan RL player of any era. They'd beable to name lots of past and present Wigan Athletic players(from the last six year admittedly).

I do think WiganRL and their players have brought more disgrace than glory on our town. From tales of Shaun Edwards eating his own sick in the bees knees,to drug offenses to GBH charges in Wigan town centre.Nothing to be happy with and nothing to celebrate.

I'm a Latics mon but aside from that i rarely watch football unless Barca,Arsenal or Utd are playing.I just like the style of those teams.I will generally tune in and enjoy most SL matches.I like Saints style of play but will generally watch any game that's is evenly matched.I do occasionally watch WiganRL from the stands but they don't and never will grip me and give me the emotional investment that the Latics do.

I just think i offer a fair and unbiased opinion on here against some of the biased and slanted WiganRL posters.

On a seperate note..an Alty ST this year is dearer than a Latics ST renewal.

As already stated on here, the "chaps" who run the media (as well as most other things in this country, and the country itself actually) all went to certain schools/universities were "rugger" was the game(union). As for the Wigan/Bath games in the mid Nineties it opened up Unions eyes.

What was abundantly obvious for a start was the difference in fitness levels of the respective sides. Second were the lines of running and defensive organisation, both of which come from the coaching that League players receive from a very early point in their education. And this has been the major area where Union has learned from its cousin.

The number of League coaches moving over may not be the same as the number of the players, but their influence has been much greater. Phil Larder and Shaun Edwards are probably the highest profile of these, but Joe Lydon, Mike Griffiths, Mike Ford, even Daryl Powell, are among those who have crossed the divide to earn their corn.

A great article Shaunie.

Some quotes from it

'Yet still the hatred flows. I’ve seen Wigan Athletic referred to as Africa Athletic on RL forums when
there’s only been one African player in the squad. Make into this what you will, I would say it’s
outright racist given the number of black faces we have in the squad,'

'I don’t
like bullies and whenever I see someone in town wearing
the colours of Wigan Rugby, I see someone wearing a shirt
that represents a group of evil bullies who tried to wipe
out their town’s football club so that they could have the
town to themselves. Quite how they continue to portray
this brainwashed image that they are the good in the town
and Latics are the bad and should be treated with derision
is beyond me after everything that has gone on. I do find
this largely unforgivable'

It's a must read.A well written unbiased piece of work.

Ive got to say though fair dues to the fans of Wigan Warriors yeaterday they certainly made there presence felt in the town centre before the game. Especially the one that attacked a yellow balloon and the one that screamed at a 50 plus women with a blue and yellow scrunchy in her hair. Then again they did proclaim to be ULTRAS! Do they have any idea what Ultras actually are?

As for the comments regarding fans fighting at the train station try taking a closer look at the article at the time and it was Man City fans, What about the annual Warrington vs Wigan trouble? The rampant use of Steroids, The cocaine and drug problems of 2 of Wigans greats plus the numerous Wigan and Ex Wigan Rugby players arrested for assault!

Shaunie,TOM doesn't like dealing in the truth of facts.

TOM,let me know how this comedy routine goes down and how many black people are 'rolling about laughing' after you call them 'treeswingers'.

After all you seem to think if they don't laugh with you, they are just lacking a sense of humour.

You're digging yourself an even big hole that usual here lad.Keep digging if you want though.

Jay,go in the G.P.O when the are drawing their wedge,no wonder they are laughing at us.Use the N.H.S without ever contributing a penny to this system, and get twice as much money as the indigenous population. No wonder racism is rearing its ugly head.Always agreed with accepting Political refugees but not these economic migrants who do nothing to enhance this country.Just decided that multi-culturism isn't working, and we are storing up a whole lot of crap for the future. Can't get legal aid nowadays as the system has been swamped with Illegals appealing extradition, scandalous state of affairs
Btw,watched the rugby yesterday and more excitement and passion engendered than three and a half seasons watching latics

May be construed as racist, but if you could ask the near million people killed defending our freedom in two world wars,I think the answer would be that they fought for Britain. And I also realise that many from the empire fought, but they should try and change the systems in their own countries, and not look to here for hand outs.We are supposedly skint, although bankers went a long way to disproving that fallacy

UTT so referring to black people has'treeswingers' is fine?

You're far more intelligent than that, don't associate with k**** like TOM.It's little wonder he is a babysitter.Although i'd never let him babysit my kids with his obscene views.

This is a bloke who thinks black people who don't laugh at his 'treeswinger jokes' have no sense of humour.

You're a FAR better poster than him UTT.

Do you have proof of the alleged sick eating incident? Did you witness it in person? Or are you just hiding behind your keyboard and making accusations? Or is it your usual " I know someone" Who saw it. You really are a sad individual aren't you?

Rugby League is the dominant winter sport in NSW and QLD , by far the highest rating sport on cable TV in OZ and is expanding into the traditional AFL areas , but to be fair AFL has one Sydney team soon to be two . All genuine sports fans enjoy high level sport , Trolls just come on to stir , the Troll on here , well he would not last 5 minutes with D grade players of RL in OZ .

Why hasn't RL gripped the nation?

For what it's worth I'll offer my two pennorth.

In my humble opinion the game isn't fluid enough. It's far too stop-start. Every time a player is tackled the game stops. I know RL fans don't see it that way but that's my opinion.

The answer? Don't really know without making it, effectively, union.

As for the media, someone has already mentioned "chicken and egg". Would there be more coverage if the sport was more popular? Or would it become more popular if there was more coverage?

I have my doubts either way. I can't see it becoming any more popular than it is.
