"King Kennys" having a Lafffff

Started by: chatty (9770)

Kenny Dalglish is quoted as saying in our paper today "I'd rather have 5 European cups than Uniteds 19 League titles"

I don't know how the guys got the Brass neck to recognise that fifth one.
How can you call yourself champions of Europe when you hadn't been Champions of youre own country for 15 years?(at the time, now 21 and counting)

Anyway a thank you to United would be more in order.
It was only Uniteds good record in Europe in the previous decade that Uefa started to allow Fourth spot in our league to compete in the competition

Come on all you fair minded people on WW lets all write to Platini to get that fifth one expunged from the record books!

Just a quick note,I take it you are a Man U fan, that statement about L'pools 5th win, you're they weren't champs of their own country, but are you sure no continental side hasn't won it after not winning their own league,I dont know,
But if you look back to when Man U won it in 1999,they didnt win the league the season before
I'm not trying to open up a can of worms hear mate,as I said just a point

I am quite aware of that Kenny, it was the first words out of our scouse bretherens mouths after we won it in 99.We obviously won the league in the same season as the Champions league which if you look back in history is in fact harder to do. My point was not to have won it for over 15 years and try to call yourselves champions of Europe is a bit rich.

Call me old fashioned but the Champions League should be for just that: The League Champions.

We all know that it is simply a European League and money making activity (nothing wrong with that though) but it's about time they changed either the name or the format.

cant see your argument chatty if your in a european competition and you win it then surely youre the champion

My argument is their claim to be European champions 5 times is slanted. Their first 4 European cups were won when only 1 English team entered the competition (unless the previous seasons winners were defending it). Yet since the formation of the "Champions League" on numerous occasions they have been allowed to challenge for the trophy when never looking like being champions of England. And when they did win it they had finished the previous season in fourth spot as already stated.

Proper bitchy statements chatty, but as I was saying, ifyou dont win your league, you are not the champs

Your "argument" is solely based on L'pool winning more than Man U,is that right or wrong

A one word reply would suffice

Check the record books, it states five time winners av a look on the trophy, It's perminatly on display in our trophy room seeing as we av one of our own for winning it five times...

Only the Champion club of each country should be in the Champions League otherwise it makes a mockery of the competition name.

Kenny if you think that's bitchy thank your lucky stars you don't know the Missus

My point was Dalglish says he would rather have 5 European cups, but for the Fifth one they owe a debt of gratitude to Utd.

Kopitesere, the same record book will also show Utd have 19 titles and for all of them it was open to a full compliment of teams!

You mean when it was the PROPER European cup? When only the CHAMPIONS of each country played for it on a knockout basis? But hey! Isn't it great to play under the present format? You don't even need to be your countries champion to qualify, you can lose two or three games and still have a shot at being " champion of europe " LOL. The tournament has been totally devalued for the sake of MONEY. Sums football up completely. God alone knows why some numpties keep forking out all their hard earned to support it.

Ease my blow about Utd's 19th?,what does it matter to me if they win another 19 on the trot

On another thread I have said there should only be the league winners in the "Champions" league, and in which case L'pool are light years away from that

The Champions League may be a misnomer, a money- spinner and elitist, but doen't it just provide some glorious entertainment.
Some of the football in recent seasons has been sublime - I agree its tainted by cheating and gamesmanship, which can often spoil it ( the barca v Real semi , eg, but there was only a smidgin' of it from that tart Busquets last night). Barca were marvellous.

The wrongly named CL is not without its obvious flaws, but we are seeing the cream of the the world's finest teams, month in month out-- and that can't be a such a bad thing if ya like or know owt about footie.
In terms of skill and entertainment, for me, it far outstrips World cups and European nations cups.
And that lad Messi is very comfortable in the same bracket as Pele, Eusebio, Best, Cruyyff, Maradonna,Zidane. 'Fact he's almost as good as Frankie Worthington.
