Football league play-offs
I think the play offs should be weighted heavily in the favour of the team that finishes third. Here is how it should be done, all one off games, extra time, penalties.
5th to play 6th. (fifth at home).
Winner to play 4th. (fourth at home).
Winner to play 3rd. (third at home).
The team finishing 3rd can end up 10-12 points ahead of the 6th place team, which is why the play-offs should favour them. So the higher you finish in the play offs, the more advantage you should get.
What does everyone think?

I have been saying this for years eddie. Your suggestion is spot on for me

There shouldn't be any playoffs
It's just marketing
The teams that finish in the top 3 should be promoted
Imagine how Man U would feel if they won the Prem by 10pts only to be beaten in a playoff game by Arsenal

Douglas, we are not tallking about the winners of a league being involved in a play off, read the post again.

I do agree with the play offs, if you look at the championship table as it stands, the play offs prevent the promotion race being over with 5 or 6 games left to play.

Play offs solely there to make money, especially being at rip off Wembley. The team with the most points finishing 3rd should go up automatically

The team finishing 3rd can end up 10-12 points ahead of the 6th place team
On the other hand,it's quite possible there could only be a couple of points between them

Only the Winners and Runners Up should be promoted like it used to be.
The play off's are nothing more then a money making exercise.

Eddie, I undersood your original post
It seems totally unfair for a team to finish in 3rd place after a long hard season and then be beaten by a team who may have finished many points behind them.
And why on earth should anyone want to prevent the promotion race being over with 5 or 6 games still to play if the top 3 deserve to go up then so be it.

After playing 42-46 games whats the point of having a league if the teams with the highest number of points at the end of said games dont automatically go up.If its the top 3teams then they should go up not 3 verses4 etc .The teams who have gained the points over the season are the teams to go up,shove the play offs

Douglas, the play offs are here to stay, that's why I would like to see them weighed in the favour of the team finishing third. They would only have to play one game and that would be at home.

Hi Eddie, I know the playoffs are part and parcel of the modern game but you asked what did the rest of us think.
I personally think that if 3 teams are to go up then they should be the 3 that did best during the regular season.
I admit it prolongs the season and can be very exciting but it doesn't seem fair on the side finishing 3rd having then to go into any further games against a team that finished below them.
Just opinion

Agree with your point Douglas.

Agreed, top three promoted on season-long merit is the fairest system.
But there used to be hell of a lot more dead rubbers for mid-table sdes with games to spare pre-play-offs. Even more so when it was just two up two down in the old 1st and 2nd divisionsbefore play-offs were introduced.
If you see the play-offs as giving a third club a chance to go up that they never used to have then the play off system is more acceptable.
There's just a hint of weakness with eddie7457's alternative sysem, and that's when a team comes like train from nowhere at the end of the season to finish 6th and they are the form side.
Whatever, there's no denying the excitement created by the play-offs, rip-off or not.
In fact, they're almost as exciting as playing 3 pops in at the back of Gallaghers when we were kids, eh, Douglas?

The excitement factor has been going downhill since they stopped making 'World Cup Willie' balls

You're reet, D, nowt's been as good as them World cup Willie balls since, not even the one I got for me birthday today signed (allegedly) by all the Whites' players.
...I think Schalke need a WCW, as we speak, to help them claw back from 4-1.
