HERO DEFINITION

After just reading my dictionary about the definition of the word HERO ,
and it state's this ,, "" HERO as a person of distinguished courage or ability, who is admired for their outstanding achievments , or noble qualities ie a war hero , NOT any of these so-call football stars who are already paid FAR too much money for just kicking around a ball or air the like of Harry Kane ,Gareth Southgate ,, THESE ARE NOT HERO'S so why do we tolerate this word being used so glibbly i just wish the tv reporters /journalist's would refrain from using it out of context ............GB

Hero or Zero!! Depends if they beat Denmark... Never seen a footballer put his life on the line... Therefore cannot be called a Hero.

Thanks for your comment, as you can gather it really does get my blood boiling ,and when i hear stories about our own service men/women when they leave are treated like crap ,it's just not on ......GB

alan i unknowingly worked with a war hero . his name was felix roger kerboas & pics are on album . i knew he was in the free french commandos but to what extend i did,nt know & netflix have just made a film of the battle he was in called the forgoten battle .

Harry Gregg put his life on the line when he went back into the wreckage at Munich........"I heard a child's cry from the plane. Captain Thain came running around my side of the cockpit and shouted 'Run, it's going to blow up'. The people running shouted again `Run!' and I shouted, `Come back, there's people alive in here' and they just kept going. I got into the plane near where I heard a voice. I was frightened of what I would find. Eventually, under a lot of rubbish I found the baby. I crawled out and started to run with it."
The child's name was Vesna Lukic, just 22 months old at the time. She was travelling with her mother, Vera, the wife of a Yugoslavian diplomat. Gregg risked his life to save the crying child, but he wasn't finished. With the smell of fuel hanging in the air and flames licking the fuselage of the plane, Gregg returned to save Vera Lukic, as well as teammates Bobby Charlton and Dennis Viollet. Many more could have died in Munich that night if it wasn't for Harry Gregg.

I worked with his daughter Karen at manchester telegrams spring Gardens many moons ago... She has passed now... Lovely girl... Never boasted about her dad Harry.

True hero chatty....but it can't be said in the same context because someone has scored a winning goal or saved a penalty ....

Of course not and I got BB's point straight away but I thought the story was worth telling again anyway.

I think hero today is someone that you admire , respect and look up to. I know what you mean GB but I don't think it has to be a war hero. there are heroes in all walks of life like volunteer lifeboat men, The fire man who risk his life to rescue a child, Someone who has devoted their life to chaity etc. But footballers are not on my list either

i remember someone, who claimed to have been in the army, saying "hero" was an overused word when it come to soldiers

I truly enjoyed reading your piece and i feel that there are special case's of people who warrant being called a hero ,and Harry Gregg most definitely deserves that moniker . I have not seen that what you wrote before ,obviously i did know about the Munich crash but not the other without keep going on,on as i have said i just think using the word hero being bandied about like the soccer commentators do infuriates me ,so take care Chatty and stay safe mate ......GB

Kathpressey,, Hi Kath you are right about hero's i think i did not get it across correctly ,obviously there are many hero's in all walk's of life like you pointed out what my main gripe was about was these commentators on tv when they refer to footballer's ie when a guy takes a penalty and score's they often will say "oh what a hero or if the goalkeeper save's a penalty they will again use that phrase " oh he was heroic saving it "" i just believe the word is completely used out of context !! hope your keeping well and safe Kath ..........GB
