Bambers of Ince

Started by: heyes (16)

Hi Everyone, I've been stuck with my Bamber branch of my family tree for quite some time now. If anyone knows any information of Vironica Bamber nee Chadwick 25 Dec 1900 - 1994 i would be most grateful to hear, last area of known residence is Scholes. Her children are Thomas, Ralph known as Raith, May, Frances, Doreen, William, Ernest, Brian, Irene, John & Vironica. Also the surname Gerrard surrounds her for some unknown reason too. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Gaffer

Thank you for your reply i have already obtained the marriage certificate, the Bamber's trace back to Blackpool i have been able to trace some of them it's my Great Grandmother Vironica that causing the brick wall i cannot find her birth record and she used two surnames, the only thing i can think of is that she may have been adopted. Her father's name is not recorded on the marriage certificate could it possibly be on her death certificate?

I know this does not match Chadwick or Gerrard but is the only Veronica Mary on ancestry for the date and I do know a lot of Halliwells lived in Little Westwood.

Name: Veronica Mary Halliwell
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1901
Registration district: Wigan
Inferred County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire

If you want to check the death certificate the ref. details are.

Wigan May 1994.
District no. O182A. Reg no, A49A. Ent no 300. DOR 594

Adoptions were not legalised until 1926 so if you want to follow that route check with the council archives at Leigh town hall as to what records they hold.

Nothing surprises me with alias names etc. that name does ring a bell though, i do know she lived in Hindley prior to their marriage Vironica is recorded at 11. George Street Hindley 1923, her husband John Bamber is recorded at 4. Raven Street Ince. Many Many Thanks for the findings i'll have a look into the possibility of Halliwell :)

My Griffiths

The find my past records show a second Veronica Haliwell registered ln Wigan in the following quarter of 1901. There is no record of the younger one in the 1901 or 1911 census. Veronica Mary is listed at Delph Street in 1901 and West Derby in Liverpool in 1911.

Just had a look at the Veronica Mary Halliwell she was born around February 1901 and married Augustine H. Watts in Liverpool so it's not that one. My mum seems to think she may have come from Rochdale or Heywood, i've check there too and still had no luck.

The Veronica Halliwell born in Wigan in the second quarter of 1901 disappeared without trace. It's reasonable bet that she was unofficially adopted and given a new surname.

Quite possibly Gaffer out of the eleven children i know she had on three of the birth certificates she stated Gerrard as her maiden name and Chadwick on the rest, she married my grandad in the name Chadwick. I've searched to see if she married more than once and i've searched the 1901 and 1911 census's nothings come up at all, i'll probably have to wait for the 1921 census being released but the earliest record i've found is her living in George Street Hindley 1923.

My Bamber's were born & living around Atherton Road / George Street area of Hindley from the mid 1800's until moving to Ince early to mid 1900's so yes quite possible, my Great Grandad John Bamber was the son of Thomas Bamber & Frances Pilkington born 27 May 1903 8. Mather Court which i think was off George Street. His dad & some of his brothers emigrated to the US. I do not have any Leonard's or Platt's so i think that might be a different line Dave.

This entry on Ince cemetery suggests the family were living in the caravans at Little Westwood in the mid 30's if this is the same William who was baptised at St.Mary's in 1935.

Hi everyone thank you for your replies! Frank its not my uncle Malcolm that you worked with, my griffiths i have the same info too yes it is them i think William died shortly after. Nutty our Irene married an Alan and moved Standish. Stuartp Veronica is the wife of John Bamber Frances son, i thought Frances had more children wasn't sure, yes she stayed here. Veronica is the one i'm struggling with i cant find any records for her so i dont know her parents etc. i dont think she was born local because of her looks and accent, family believe Rochdale way but i think her parents may descend from afar. I've just spoke too my mum who is going to take me to see Veronica's youngest son possibly tuesday.

Hi mygriffiths yes thank you and thank you to everyone who replied. Her son only really knew as much as us but he did mention a name who he was told was her brother and that she often said she lived in Wallgate when young but when anyone tried to talk about it she would change the subject. Anyway i did some searching when i came home last night and after two years of searching i've finally found her and uncovered the reason behind the alias names, it turns out she also used a false date of birth and often spelt her name in different ways too. I'm just going to double check all avenues tonight to make sure 100%
