Dowbler

In the 1871 census, a relative of mine who lived in Pemberton is listed as having the occupation of Master Dowbler.

Does anyone have any idea of what this is?

Thanks

Probably a spelling mistake. Could me a Dauber which means painter?

Having checked the spelling countless times on the census form, it is definately dowbler. His son is also listed as a dowbler.

It's got me stumped that's for sure. Anyone else fancy a guess?
