Derbyshire (this is a longshot)

Started by: empress (9667)

This is a long shot but....
I am trying to trace a grave in Wigan of a John William Derbyshire, possibly at Ince Cemetry, we aren't sure.
This was my grandfather who died when my mum was 2 or 3 and she is now wondering where he was buried.
We know his sister in law Irene Derbyshire was later buried with him, her husband was Tommy Derbyshire.
All we know is he was born in 1914 or around that time, we are estimating him to be around the age of our grandmother Kitty Derbyshire (nee fitzgerald).
My mum has a vague memory of her father , she thinks he died around 1941 , but it could be within a year or 2 of that.
So any ideas on where I start with this one from anyone will be greatly appreciated.I have never sought any family history before so am going in blind.
I'm looking for correct dates of birth and death, also the location of the grave so my mother can visit it.
Many Thanks.

The history shop have all the records. Or you can contact the Registry office who will give you a date of death. When you have a date of death you can contact the cemetery department who will be able to give you a grave number.

There is a cemetery index on here under "stuff" for Ince Cemetery. Unfortunatley at the moment it only goes up to 1932. I have been waiting for ages for it to be updated with later info. Keep an eye on it as im sure that it must be updated soon.

FERT thank you SO much, you are a superstar!I have applied to join the forum to thank you there too. I managed to find birth certificate yesterday so my mum finally has a date of birth for her dad, now I can locate the grave she actually visit. The only memory she has of this man was being lifted up to say tara before they closed his coffin she was 2 and a half. Its bothered her on and off for years, especially this last year as she was very sick herself and only finished chemo a few months ago. She can at least pay her respects and have some knowledge of the dates etc now.
Thanks again

Thanx Christi, I managed to contact them and we have been to the grave.Amazingly it was facing the grave of my mums first husband who died in his very early twenties. We are going to mark the grave in some way over the next week, as theres a faded old pot on with his name only. I suspect that the last member of the family to be buried there has no family, cos the grave doesn't look like its been touched since 1976 when she was laid to rest, even the pot with his name on was still to one side from when the grave was dug.The deeds are still in my grandmothers name, so now should come to my mum, but my great uncle , his wife and his step mother are all buried there too, my great uncle asked for the deeds when his wife died young and never returned them to my grandmother.
Its like a weight has been lifted off my mum , its bothered her for years.
So thanks everyone for your help.

So pleased you found his grave, I have been searching one of my ancesters who died in the N 'land Fusiliers in Ireland 1885, and been looking every where for his Grave Wigan Cem: dont seem to have any trace of him and cannot find him in the Irish Cemetarys. but at least I have now located his Death Cert in Ireland after 5 yrs of searching and I am now awaiting it to see what he died of
