1938 road traffic accident George Ratchford
Hi
I am trying to find out information on my relative George Ratchford who was killed in a road traffic accident in Oct 1938. George was only 7 years old when this happened. I would like to be able to find out where this happened and any other details. Has anyone any ideas where I can start this search. I have tried to google it as I thought there may be a newspaper report about it, but did not find anything. All advice appreciated. Thanks.

Contact the museum of life Wigan , details of accident probably in copies of the local papers for Wigan. As you will have seen he was living in Victoria Street Wallgate at the time ,the chances are he died on the main road Wallgate

It’s a legal formality when someone dies without leaving a will. It’s a grant of letters of administration to bring the affairs of a deceased to a final conclusion. George’s parents, as the beneficiaries, would receive any proceeds. In this case, as would be expected of a child in those days, the value of his estate was nil.

Wallgate is the name of the Main Road and also the area is known as Wallgate , so to know the exact place of the accident you will have to see the report /inquest. In case you already haven't seen, George is buried in Wigan Cemetery Grave No. J 952 R.C. , along with other family members (go to Wigan Cemetery Index on this site)
