Dunn Family

Started by: DebCas (4)

Is anyone here related to James Dunn who was born in Hindley in 1868? He was married to Alice (Bullen) and they had seven children, one of whom sadly died. The surviving children were called Annie, Lily, John William, Mary Alice, Ellen and Agnes. I have been trying to scramble over this brick wall, in my family tree, for the past couple of years now and any help at all would be gratefully received

The family seemed to have moved around a lot from the children's birthplaces.A misprint in the 1911 of Tudley for Hindley actually appears as Indley on the census written by James and where he has written the address as 31,Frederick Street St.Helens which is close to Leonard Street in the St.Helens Junction area.

Thank you very much for all of your help mygriffiths. I suspect that they probably moved around a lot with being a coal mining family. Many thanks for the additional info on Frederick street, St Helens and for deciphering Tudley as being as misprint of Hindley. I had been wondering where on earth Tudley was!

James's mum was called Mary and she worked for a time as a charwoman. His dad was called John and he worked as a brickyard labourer. John must have died not long after James was born as Mary is listed as a widow on each census record. James was born at 12 Low Mill, Hindley. In 1871 they were at Alma Hill Up Holland. In 1881 they had moved to Barracks off Higher Lane, Up Holland. In 1891 James appears to be lodging with a family called Melling at 16 Higher Lane, Up Holland. He married Alice in 1894 and they moved to 20 Hart Street, Westhoughton.

I wasn't sure if you were looking for more recent family connections but glad this was of some use.

Yes, I am hoping to find someone who knows the family. James is my great grandfather but I know very little about his parents. The only info I know about James himself is what I have found from census forms and birth\marriage centificates. Mary, his mum, was born in Roscommon and her maiden name was Gavin. Any information is really helpful and might just jog someone's memory.

That is great, thank you so much! James had a younger brother called Joseph and an older one called John and the date on James's birth certificate is 10th June, so it is definitely him No I don't have access to Find My Past, I use Ancestry at my local library.
