Toffee Makers

I have just found two of my relatives described as 'own toffee manufacturers' in the 1939 Register.
They were living at 158 Scholes.
John BROMILOW 1872-1947 and his son Thomas Victor BROMILOW aka Victor Thomas 1894-1944

Does anyone know of them and/or their toffee.

I hasten to add I am NOT looking for BMD/Census info but Electoral roll info for the business would be of interest, did they make it at home or elsewhere?

We both need glasses, it actually says 'own made Toffee Manufacture??' the last couple of letters are distorted and cramped in the crease, that's a tick in front of 'own' not an 'h'.

They obviously didn't want to be associated with another company, no prizes for guessing who, which may or may not have connections with another branch of my family. Still trying to find a connection two generations before the famous one started.

Mac, have you seen this letter? It's titled a lot of humbug, it's about your relatives. Hope the link works, ages since I did one!

No I hadn't seen that. I'm on my tablet at the moment and the article is proving difficult to read, I'll have another go later.
That's what I love about sites like this, someone always has that little bit of esoteric knowledge tucked away.

It enlarges to a readable size on my iPad. You should be able to enlarge it if you have a touch screen put two fingers together on the screen, and push them outwards.

I've managed to read the letter and very interesting it was too. Only problem, it refers to an article in a previous issue and I can't find it. I've looked in issues 37-39 but can't see it.
Any ideas?

Mac, I've looked also, without success. But though the letter references the previous issue, it might not have been published in the next issue. It's from 2005, but I wonder if it might be worth trying to track down the author of the letter? Who seems to have quite a bit of information.

Found it! It's just a brief reference in issue 39. Page 30.

Found it! It is indeed in the previous issue (39) page 30 middle column line 11 onwards.
Sounds like he was a real character.

Will they still be alive? 14 years since publication.
I could ask in a future edition on the off chance.

But maybe not, I use the term 'relative' loosely.
John BROMILOW married at least one and probably a second sister of the wife of the eldest brother of my paternal grandmother (no he wasn't a bigamist and it was legal by the time they married). I'm not sure what that makes him relationship wise, I'm no good at that sort of thing, which, as I have said before, is why I'm still single.

The John Bromilow you refer to 1872-1947 was my great grandad. Leslie Bromilow who wrote to Past Forward was my Dad and John's grandson. It would have been his birthday today but he dies in 2011.

Do you know the dates they manufactured the toffee and where it was produced? A lock up was mentioned I think.

I came across your G'gdad when I started tracing the 13 children in one family in my tree and found several of them had almost as many children as their parents and one thing led to another.

I don't really know any more than what my Dad wrote about in Past Forward. I can ask my Mum to see if she can remember anything else. Also my Dad's little sister that he refers to may know something, I will ask her. All this will probably be after Christmas as I go away at the weekend until after New Year. Do you have your family tree anywhere on line. Mine is on Genes Reunited, I could give you access if you want.

No rush. Whenever is convenient.

I do have a tree on-line but it is heavily truncated, it is less than 250 out of nearly 1000 on my PC version, and not upto date, it doesn't contain your family. If you still want to see it go to 'MyHeritage' and look for WilsonBerry. I'll defer a decision on viewing your tree until after the New Year if I may?
