A friend has asked me to enquire about the name of a very good TOY SHOP in Wigan Market Street, in the late 1960s--1970s, he says he has a photo which is blocked by a corpy bus,its between rumbellows at the bottom end up to where` Smiths was ( now heart foundation) he says you could buy anything mostly Hornby trains, dolls everything if iCIATEt was not on that side it could have been opposite what was OLIVER SOMMERS, I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP.

There was a pram shop which I think ventured into toys. This was next door to Crawfords wool shop which was on the opposite corner to Smiths book shop. At the time I am speaking of Smiths was The Scotch Bakery. Maybe earlier, 1950/60s

I think Baillies was the Scottish bakers on Mesnes Street.

yes yes ,but what was the toy shops name.oliver summers sold fishing tackle shotguns and country hiking gear,i dont remember toys in that shop.

Oliver somers Sold Trix Model Railways As did Pendleburys, I used to buy My model railway stuff from Them.

There was a toy shop in Market Street in the early 1970's but I would have said it was more like a model shop, it was only a small shop and it was located towards the bottom of Market Street and it seemed to sell mainly Airfix type of model kits and it had old fashioned shelving, which went all the way up to the ceiling and it also sold Hornby train sets and separates, I remember buying a Hornby Tank Engine and Flying Scotsman, in between Christmas and New Year in 1973

Right sir bob.... I very often called in there (late 50s early 60s) for balsa wood and piano wire. It was primarily a model shop.

That's it sir bob ,I think you have hit the bulls eye my next door neighbour said he used to by model planes made of balsa wood , he recollects he was down that end too.

Roy Turner's prams and toys was in Mesnes Street as were Rumbelows and Smith's bookshop See Ann's ref. above to see a pic of the shop. The shop in Market Street was a model shop.

Robin was the owner & Colin was the Manager
