Winnie, I have been trying to find your grandfather, but there's not much to go on. I did find a John Johnson born in Orrell in 1925 but that's not really much help to you, as it's not necessarily right and in any case it doesn't get you any further.

Do you know your grandmothers Christian name?

Your grandfather must have died young if your grandmother was a widow in 1960s, could he have died in the war?

On this database his birth is registered as in Wigan, but on Lancashire BDM it's registered as Orrell.

Sorry winnie, got confused! Old age is a terrible thing
You did say your dad lived with his grandmother, obviously your great grandmother! I missed a generation.

I will have another look and get back to you if I find anything.

Charles st was a off City road, it was facing the Cricket club, the entrance was at the side of the post office, it was only a dirt road.

EQ, yes there were allotments up there, and it was surounded by farmers fields.
I used to go up there with a mate, to visit one of his relations, it was the lane between Shuttleworths? paper shop and the post office.

As I said on the other Kitt Green 1908 thread my brother rented an allotment up there and it seems the name was Johnson who he rented it from.

"Erontquay, as I recall there were 5 separate allotments (pens) directly behind our cottages on Glovers Place. The Johnsons at No 9 had the first. We were at No 11 and had the next. Harry Hill (Hill's Pet Shop) at No 12 had the next. The end one was rented by Bill Shuttleworth" (Newsagents/Toy Shop on City Road). The fifth one was between the first 4 and the farmers field and was rented by Jim Baxter at No 16. Jim bred rabbits and turkeys!

I belive City road was the border between Wigan and Orrell, one side was in Wigan, and the other side was in Orrell.

Here´s a strange one , just been on old-maps.co.uk .....
1849 map of Kitt Green / Orrell .... the area around top end of Mpntrose Avenue is called "Orrell City" . Never heard that before . Origins of City Road´s name ?

Dodger, you're wrong.

City Road was the boundary between Orrell and Pemberton.

Talking about local authorities - it was the boundary between Orrell Urban District Council and Pemberton Urban District Council, which later became part of Wigan County Borough Council.
