Building in King St West

Started by: taylork54 (247)

Hi all, this is a copy of my latest post in the Hobbies Messageboard, for those who havent seen my model of Wallgate Station and surroundings that I am building, I am in need of a little help.
The model is based in the late 40's ~ early 50's and while WW has been a massive source of information sometimes there are gaps.

I have numerous buildings on the go at any one time at the moment, currently working on Hellers Furniture store Wallgate / King St West and while I am pretty well ok with Hellers the premises under the same roof as Hellers and adjacent to the 'Alliance Chambers' (??) is a bit vague.
I have good detail of the building from about 1978 onwards, when it was "M A S Sales" but have no idea what / who was there in the late 40's ~ early 50's

If anyone has any ideas or knows who might,I would appreciate the Info.
In the meantime a bit of furniture in Hellers

Cheers,
Kevan Taylor

I'm almost sure that there was a taxi firm/funeral directors there in the fifties, but I can't think of the name.

Dodger are you thinking Middleton and Woods. They were thereabouts but I don't think on the corner, possibly a little more into King St. West.

GB....I remember Hellers being there on the end/corner and looking at the pictures I think M&W could have been where M A S is located. I went there to order the wedding car for my wedding about 1961. It was necessary to book months in advance because they were so popular. M&W later moved to somewhere close to where Dominoes pizza place is now.

Thanks for the input all, I was wondering if M & W was at that spot, I know Art has mentioned them being in that area a couple of times in much earlier posts. The bit that throws me is if the front part of Hellers is in Wallgate and the back part of it is no. 1 King St West, that makes MAS no. 2 and the Alliance Chambers no. 3, an advert for M & W was posted at one stage showing them at No. 3 ???????
Curioser and curioser said Alice.
Mum often comments that I am too fussy over small details but I figure if I 'm going to do it it should be as close as possible, hence trawling the Internet looking for suitable photos of 40's ~ 50's furniture for Hellers' window
Cheers once again, keep the thinking caps available as there WILL be more of these questions.

Hello Kev...here is a family bill I have been hunting for, address on billhead. Could it be property numbers are odd.

Thanks for that Anne, it certainly confirms M&W being at No.3 AND I have just found a photo in my collection that shows a street no.5 on the Alliance Chambers next door so M&W were in the M.A.S.Sales site!
I don't suppose anyone can remember how it looked?
(Where's Art when you need him to pop in with a photo and a description)
Otherwise I will have to invoke Modeller's Licence and improvise.

Cheers again
Kev
