EMPTY STORES

Started by: GOLDEN BEAR (6556)

I was in Wigan today (Tues) with the wife we had been to Rymans, and decided to come back thro MARKET GATE ,wow what a shock we had as we passed ,Peacock's and turned left SCOTT'S store and a ladies hair salon were open, then has we walked all the way to the end there was not another store open. It really was a ghost town. One has to ask why was the (white elepant built in the first place) I mean the ols station road area. SURELY all that was needed was to revamp that whole area, they could have had a nice park and benches, also an extra car park . But back to that Market/gate empty store's it's exactly the same underneath too they have all gone, I hope visitor's to WIGAN don't go down there .just imagine their comments!
Finally are our councillors proud at what they have created???

No foresight, no idea Wigan council. The opportunity years ago to maintain and/or create /recreate a small "market" town similar to say Skipton now lost. We are now just a very poor clone of many towns. £4-30 return to Manchester-- Where would you prefer to go!!!!

Well thanks dannyboy I see were your coming from £4quid return to Manchester or free if you have a bus pass there is no chance of Wigan ever competing ,the plus side too is you can spend most of the day there taking in shops ,then round it off with a good lunch, grand day out had by all, then you look at our town , it's no contest!

The nearest market town to where I live is thriving. It's not as big as Wigan , it's more Ashton size.

The thing is, the first hour of parking is free, so if your just popping in to pick up your dry cleaning or nip to the post office there are no parking charges.

I've never come across such a thing before, but I can tell you it works!

Baker boy, it's not generally the case that town centre parking is free here.

Bury st Edmunds in expensive, so is Ipswich and Norwich, but these are sizeable towns.

Diss (the size of Ashton) and Eye (the size of Standish) are both free for the first hour. They serve a lot of outlying villages and hamlets, and both are always busy.

First hour is FREE
1 - 2 hours £1.00
2 - 3 hours £1.50
3 - 4 hours £2.00
Over 4 hours £3.00

St.Helens centre parking is free on Saturdays and after 3pm. Normally, 30p for 30 minutes, 60p up to 1 hour and £1 for three hours.

Wigan is £1.10 for up to 1 hour, £1.90 up to 2 hours and£2.70 to 3 hours. No wonder nobody goes there anymore!

For shops, neither one is 'better' than the other. Driving there, parking, then driving home again, puts St.Helens way in front.

And that's unbiased too, because I can't abide shopping!
