Visit by Mother Teresa

Started by: stjon (206)

Apologies in advance for this sketchy info, but my wife is an old Wiganer and she remembers being in a school about 45 years ago, run by nuns I think, and she was chosen to present flowers to Mother Teresa when she visited the UK and the Wigan area. It meant so much to my wife as a Catholic, and she would love to find out more info, especially a photo, which I assume would have been taken for such an important occasion. I am trying to find out information as a surprise for my wife, hence the lack of info. Can anyone help please?

Hi, my sisters and my niece were at Wigan Station to meet Mother Teresa when she arrived in the town. They were part of a handful of children there to meet her on a wet Saturday morning. My Dad took a picture of them with Mother Teresa, the only picture in existence that I know of. In fact the Wigan Observer contacted my Dad to ask him could they reproduce the picture for their paper.

Bluesfan - so grateful for your reply! Do you have ANY more info?? Date? Names of anyone who attended? Does the photo still exist - I suppose there's a chance my wife might be in it...

I attended Notre Dame High School in Standishgate from 1969 to 1974 when it closed down and we had nuns there as teachers .I remember Mother Teresa's visit there in between these years .A few photos are on Wigan World of the school and several more on Friends Reunited .I hope this is of some help to your wife stjon.

I used to like Mother Teresa, and also that song Elton sung about her Sandals in the Bin, when she died.

@NickMotown

Elton John once visited Leigh, Mick,
but does anyone know more about Mother Teresa’s visit to Springfield?

Georgie Fame lived there, and he owned a club in London called the Bag of Nails, which I went in once.
