Post code area are a mess. St Helens has a Warrington post code , Atherton has a Manchester post code Same with Phone numbers Golborne has a Wigan code but comes under Warrington .All down to which exchange/sorting area you come under

i have 1 even better than that . the chemist in billinge rd has a wigan phone number & you walk thru the door into the doctors & theirs is a st helens phone number ? . work that 1 out .

I may have the answer to your telephone quandary.

It is all to do with how things were done in the past.

Something called 'private lines': typically a telephone service that uses a dedicated, usually unswitched point-to-point circuit. I recall doing one of these in 1960's, from Horace's Shoe Shop, at corner of Bryn Street and Wigan Road, in Ashton, to proprietor's home on Liverpool Road. There is only one line to the exchange, and one telephone number. Both home and business can access it. The business phone would be switched through to the house when shop is closed.

In the case which you describe:

Either the chemist or the clinic may have had such a system.

If one home was in Wigan, but the business in St Helens (or vice versa) as far as telephone numbers were concerned, the the phone being connected to the exchange via the private line will apparently be numbered as if in the other area.

Anachronistic, but we did not always have cheap telephony, mobile phones, and suchlike. I remember when waiting list for getting a telephone was commonplace, and many had shared service (party lines) to stretch the available cable capacity.

Question for anyone that can answer it.

On a map I found, dated 1914, it shows that there was a pub t the junction of Booths Brow Road and Rectory road. It was roughly where Jack Slaters pen was. Do any of you know what it was called, and anything else about its history?

I've looked on our old map but no signs of a pub just pens, only pub anywhere near is Blue Bell, maybe dougie or bentlegs may know summat.

The Bell is shown on the same map, as is the church. Both are marked simply as Inns.

Hi uncle joe, I can see using maps that are on this thread an inn where you say just on corner where leyland green road meets booths brow, that's in 1885 it's also on a map dated 1920, but on these maps it doesn't show blue bell with the inn you mentioned, what site did you get the map showing both inns.

I googled "side by side georeferenced maps" looking for somthing else when I found it. Its still shown on the OS maps 1940 to 1947.

Uncle joe, was there a post office facing blue bell, a map of 1949 is showing that, I can only remember jack Prescotts allotment and a bookies.

Bambam: The Post Office was not facing the Blue Bell, but higher up, more or less opposite the church. In the 50's, it was lower down Rectory Road. Opposite the Bell was a Betting Shop, as well as a phone box. I'm not 100% certain, but I think that was in another location in the 50's. Dougie will know when he turns up.

Back to the pub. As it was shown on the 1947 map, some of the older DG:ers should be able to remember it, as it must have been there when families were moving onto the estate

yes i remember post office facing church uncle joe, it was run by Norman White at the time and when he retired it closed down i think that was in mid to late 70s.

The telephone box was in a garden further down road,I’m not sure if it was Normans mother and father .who I think run the post office before him,

You're right trixie. As I remember Mr & Mrs Crompton were Mrs Whites parents. They ran the post office from their front room. It was the last terrace in the row from Kevin Duffy place and had the post box just inside their front gate, across from the parish hall. When they retired Mr & Mrs White took over the post office business and ran it from their house across from the church.

I dont remember a Mr. &Mrs. Crompton at the Post Office either. The only family with that name I knew lived in Cedar Grove.

As the pub was still there in 1947, I can only guess that the name would be rememberd by the first families that moved on to the estate, or those living at the top end of Rectory Road.

the pub was there at the turn of the century & no houses in downall green except rectory rd . iv,e looked it up & in 1869 the blue bell was listed in the wigan directory & was run by a robert norris & no other pub is listed in n/ashton.

yes iv'e seen bowling green on old maps Bri, i was looking for the morgue which i believe was in bell vault at one time, but in them days they had to use places like that on a temporary basis.

Oh thanks Bri, that's just before my time then, it's now a game that's dying out the two large bowling greens in Wigan park had been magnificent for years, these greens were very busy in summer and nice evenings but they are derelict now, such a shame.

It makes you wonder where all old folk go now as there is no entertainment and clubs anymore, the village back in day was packed sat & sun nights, and me and Kevin as the bingo hosts,ha ha and stamping Stan foster the compère,good laughs back then.

Hi annemarie, downallgreen is a village between Billinge and Bryn and sits alongside Garswood I was born and bred there and most of my friends still live there, I myself now reside in Wigan and my old friends keep me updated as to what goes on and we can reminisce on wiganworld, thanks for your post you are more than welcome to join us.

Thi old parish Hall being done up don't know who's got it I've been told it's going to be a support centre for victims of abuse don't know where they come from but I know we're the land

That will be St. Helens council Malc sending you all ther unwanted, the old frog lane yard now hosts flats for drug users and a battered wife's refuge, the people who dwell there are from Leigh and platt bridge and other areas, the old workhouse has flats housing all sorts of undesirables, police are never away and the council are building more houses on the old regentruck site so I'm now surrounded.

I certainly ain't never heard of one Bri, I don't think there was any brick buildings on that stretch after Bill raffertys property.

people may not know but they rigged their own communication phone up from each others house as there was only one public phone in the village in the 60s

It seems we are all wrong guys, the church was demolished 1972 and it was waste land until kwik save was built in early 80s.

Hi trixie, yes I remember all the steps it must have been a struggle for the elderly back then to climb them, I also recall the steps of the old rectory school my classroom was first one as you entered don't know how miss burton got up there, good old days.

It was dark and scary trixie with that big wooden door at the top I remember mr Hughes caretaker unlocking it with the biggest key I have ever seen, I thought there was more steps to church than Peter says but 12 steps would be like walking upstairs.

Respect, Respect , you never saw the respect all the village had for the headmaster of DG school Stan Foster G.P plus others things, even Harry Lowe, the Police, and Rector hall had to show him respect all the time. you may have seen photo's of him walking on his own on Trinity Sundays, as we got older he would say your leaving here and I don't want to see you ever again, I know for a fact 3 lads had to go in front of him in court No NAMES after leaving D.G. school

Dougie I left DG in 1975 and a lot of the older generation are no longer with us. How many of the families of the late 40's -60's have relations who still live at DG It always had what we called rough families but when St Helens Council took over the reigns it became the dumping ground for even more rough families . The estate has expanded since it was 1st built and is nearly full with new houses , Houses on Leyland Green Road with plans for more ,Top of Birch Grove on the old garages plot,Where Millingfords was Slaters pen and across the road just to name a few. The modern era where neighbours don't know each other. Gone are the days neighbours used to have a natter in the street so the village feel has gone

When I lived on estate Malc Mr & Mrs Roberts lived where john is now, they were Margaret Houghtons parents and John Hurst lived next door I remember john he worked with my uncle Maurice and Bill cunliffe driving Bin lorry around Ashton.

Just like to say 1951 when we moved from DG school at 11 years old to Ashton Secondary Modern School it was a big change from a small place like DG, the cavalry was all ready there in the form of the big lads off the estate that had made their mark as being a rough lot, they never stud up for you but everyone knew how far they could go, If a fight brock out they would croup round shouting go-on-knock-his- head-off, he'll not come again even if you loose things like the

There was always a click in there Malc even when club was packed they would always be sat in same seats, when they had good artists performing there regulars would get relatives and friends put glasses on tables early evening to save their places, does Jeff knowles still live on estate.

Weird that Malc,as a youngster I was errand boy running to all shops on estate for the neighbourhood I remember them all, Mrs Scully, Mrs Livesley, Mrs Jameson, Mrs Heyes, Mrs Haugh, Mrs Pennington and they all treated me well I got a shilling in the old money, then when decimalisation come in 71 I got brand new 10 pences, that was a lot to a boy in them days I could get 2 jubilees with 10p.

I've not seen them for years I remember them being triangular and the more you bit into them the tastier they got, I think calypso was the same thing but kids don't thrive on them these days, used also get jusoda pop and tizer then take empty bottle back and get 5p good old days.

Had a look on Asda site cannot find any for sale now They were on sale a couple of weeks ago for a couple of quid ,I picked a box up but put them back when I saw the size of them. Would not buy them for the grand kids No size to them not worth the price

oh yes trixie, i think we all have a soft spot for ice cream i used to love the cornets with a flake in covered in raspberry sauce off fredricks we called them 99s.

I just had one from local ice cream man been round minus the flake .

That's something you don't see much of these days ice cream vans, i remember on the estate back in day you could set your clock with them Deroma would come at 1.30 and Fredricks at 3.00 stopping in same place everytime.

There are not many ice cream vans which sell what I call proper ice cream by the scoop . Most sell the runny ice cream dispensed from a m/c and melts in seconds and is messyWith the price of ice cream i don't know of many people who can buy it every day. There is a van which pulls up near where I live and at times he gets NO sales.

You are right about that peterp, Deromas had runny ice cream out of machine but Fredricks was a scoop out of freezer and lasted much longer, I remember the broken cornet plea as well Malc, Fred used say go and ask your Dad for 2 pence.

i remember him well Bri outside school, Fred hated him as he got all custom he always gave you a big ice cream, yes Malc Dave Roberts was a very generous guy who looked after all the people on estate.
