Good snooker player Ken Moore in a class of his own in the Village club, I,ve come up with another shop in Downall green that I think everyone as mist clue, Tumtingle you will know it was still trading in 1959

Bambam we(Partridge) lived at No45. Thinking back when we moved in (approx 1963) it was overcrowded has there were 4 boys in the back bedroom in bunk beds and two girls in bunk beds in the little front box room and both parents in the main bed room.

Good old photo here of Seneley Green coal mine Somewhere at Garswood the young lad is bereaved to be my Brother Ralph that was apprentice fitter at Stone's Colliery, Liverpool Road , the fitters had also to look after that mine to as it was part of Stone's and part of his training

The rain stopped play last week as was a storm but to be fair its the only day weve missed since beginning of May. I can get photos to you aswel.

Hi We could do with 2or3 old lengths of square drain pipe to stop all that water from running down to the other graves plus a bit of artificial turf to finish the right side off, grass or weeds will never grow there and at some stage the path maybe extended to the newer section at the top

bad news guys my auntie maureen scully nee shaw has passed away yesterday .

Oh god such bad news Bri, I remember the family very well growing up on estate, have loads of memories of them, feel so much for the girls R.I.P Maureen.

i heard that she was ready to go to my uncle harold.

Aww bless her they were a very devoted couple and loved to dance, I seen them dancing on many occasions and I must admit they was very good.

On that note Bri, I remember the photo on WW with Harold shaw, Bill Ryder, Arthur speakman, Joe Glaze, Gerry Lewis, Johnny speakman, George Percival, and Derek Higham and a few more, I think there is only Derek Higham from that class photo who is still with us, I Bet that was a rum crew.

Went up Sunday no one there so had to carry thee bags of stone from the car to finish the job I started Saturday, anyway got it finished but still not satisfied it could do with going all across to the other path hopefully to stop the water from finding a new path and it well now you've opened it up.
Taking to the grave digger he said he would come and help me if you decide to go all across as they have loads of trouble when they have to reopen a grave in that area with water

Brynkiwi--Went too the Churchyard to put Christmas flowers on my Mam/Dads grave, also put a small one in with the flowers on your Mam/Dads gave, they have finished all round it now and cut back the edge about 3 foot they've made a good job of it for you

I will attempt to put the on album could bring back a few memories. This was your Star darts team,not as good as when me and Ken played ????????

That was a sticking point with me and ken about the best team, I had moved to the Star team in 1968/9 by 1980 I had moved from the Star as I was working shifts, one think I can say I never got dropped from the best team in Ashton at that time plus one thing I can still brag about I have been round the board in 7 darts twice but not in a match, but will never forget the two places I did it as for 180s

Yes, the mention of the Star Hotel, does bring back memories of my childhood days living at Bryn in the 40s. So from down here in Staffordshire, I wish Dougie and everyone at Downall Green a very merry Christmas and a hopeful New Year.

One or two things here that no one as talked about start at the farm on Wigan Rd, first cross the road a small shop Ormshaws, then The Star, next row Corniehokies in the middle of row, then the yard down the entry at the back of the house's that was also Ormshaws heavy haulage and breakdown yard, and the shop at the start of the next row can't remember the name ? do you, I remember Tommy Armstrong having it as a storage place before being made back into a house.

Hi Dougie, as a schoolboy in the 40s, my best mate was Gerald Hodgkinson who lived at 190 Wigan Rd. I also mated with Graham Critchley who lived at 160 Wigan Rd. it was a shop owned by his Grandmother Mrs. Smith, but now converted back to a house. I used to help to deliver milk for Mr. Fairhurst the dairyman who lived at 166 Wigan Rd, the dairy was an extension built on the back of the house. He had the land behind his house where he kept chickens and pigs, also his son Eric had a large pigeon loft as he bred and raced pigeons. As regards the shop before the Star pub, it was Nathan Wrights grocery, known by the locals as Tanny Wrights. The entry by the shop led to the haulage yard and business which was owned by Doctor Fulton and traded under the name of A & D Motors, (Andrew & Dorothy). Further down Wigan Rd toward Ashton was Cansfield Grove, wherein the 40s the Eaves family, founders of Eavesway Coaches lived in a house opposite the school, they had two small coaches, one parked on the driveway and the other on the road. My knowledge is limited from Bryn Cross down to A-in-M. As for Bryn Cross, the butchers there in my time was Ben Turners and managed by the Croft family, two sons Derek & Donald, both deceased. I hope this explains a bit about the 40s era but at 86 years old it's surprising that I can still remember.

Hi Dougie, in the 40s didn't know much about the Downall Green area, apart from going to St Peter's School in Downall Green Road. There was a house somewhere opposite the school with a model railway in the garden & a few doors down from the school was Naylor's shop, their son Walter was in my class. I also remember the Oddfellows, but as for the two shops, my memory fails me. But surprisingly later in the late 60s, I was a bus driver for LUT, at their Atherton Depot and sometimes drove the 55/56 Routes. Leigh, Lane Head, Golborne, Stubshaw Cross, Ashton, Bryn Cross, Sims Road End, the onward to Billinge or Garswood.

Brogan's is definitely where Crofts had the shop. Round the corner in Bryn Road is Fire & Spice, note the alteration to the brickwork so has to make the window smaller. In the 40s this was a lock-up haberdashery shop run by the Adamson sisters who lived at 154 Wigan Rd.

Can't remember the Chip shop Dougie. Just looked on Google Earth. The row of Houses next to St Peters going down to Bryn Cross. I am sure the one with the big bay window used to be a shop. there is a plaque on the houses saying Park Lane Co-op 1885 or 1895.

Hi Bri, alan85 is correct with Dave Brogan taking over the shop that was croft at one time, the other butcher facing was picton, and to think Dave was my neighbor at one spell I wonder how time passes so quickly.

they had to knock conkers chippy down because of subsidy & now there,s a gap where they used to be & they had to bolster up the ends of the remaining houses . dav do you remember the chippy in brocksteads ? .

There were two chippies at Brocksteads the one next to the post office a real shop chippy call Woods I'll go as far as to say no one on here will remember it, the other was down at the bottom on the righthand side about the 6th house after the last shop there were three shops in that row, it was just the front room of a house made into a chippy

Hi Dougie i remember the chippies at Brocstedes the one across from our ladies and the other in the middle of the row of houses,was owned byAlec Williamses wifes family. whose name was Mrs Catterall.and the terraced houses next to the oddies,had a small shop,which was bought by Cyril Cunliffe beforehe moved to Bll Charnocks shop on Wigan rd.

Your right on everything you have said but think again as if was yesteryear you are looking through your window to the right of the pub the entry you would see is still there and two gates across and a newish building at the back, when we were lads that place was a Joiners yard and building we got sawdust and wood shavings for the rabbit hutch Free the other side of the entry was a row of terrace houses going to Greenalls backs the first one was a chip shop, is brother also had one on wigan road there were two small shops Chapman made one into a barbers followed by Len then Barclays bank but cant remember which was the chippy. ---Hope you can follow this Alan85---

Alan my last post to Bert was walking from the traffic lights on the right hand side to the school that you must have walked 5 days a week, from the lights first row of houses with chippy on the end, Joiners place up the entry before the Oddfellows pub, just after the pub was another row of houses with a sweet shop at the end, cross over sasme side the church, another row of house then the school, you can still see these on google street

Think you are correct Brian regarding the houses across from St Peter's School. In the 90s there was a Chinese food takeaway which was the front room of the house. It was demolished along with next door in the mid/late 90s. I know this because my daughter worked there. Catterall's chippy was lower down near Booths Brow Road. There was also the shop near there which was owned at one time by John Newbiggin (girls band conductor) and his wife, probably the one you say Glen had.

I can't remember the chippys Bri, but suesa is right about Mr Newbiggin he lived in that shop when me and my brother played in haydock & Ashton band with his son Les, I can Only just remember Dickie Eccys mams chippy.

Seem to remember the shop being called "the Larder" or similar and at the other end of the row before Our Lady's school was Hursts shop. Other corner turning at Booth Brow was a small co-op

I remember a chap who had a chippie in 70s and he lived in dellside close his name was Les Darbyshire.

He lived facing Bill Ryder's where Simon is now Bri, I think he was a joiner by trade I worked with him until he retired at a late age, very handy chap he was a good all rounder and could turn his hand to anything, he retired at Galleries and did all Maintenance there, he's done work at simon's and is still with us, Great bloke.

Whups That was Tommy Balls shop when me and bentlegs were lads, the shop across the road was Barton's they also had a chippy in their back yard

when i was a lad it was daintys & across the road was annie deacons.

As I remember things, the chippy was on the corner of Booths Brow Road and Rectory Road. There was a toffee shop at the other end of that row.

The Post Office moved to be more or less opposite the school. Before that it was on the same side, but a lot lower down Rectory Road. There was a phone box just outside. That was later moved to the corner opposite the school-

Daintys was on one corner, Annie Deacons opposite, and Tommy Turners on the third corner. I have a very vague memory that a house on the other corner was demolished.

The Co-op was down at the bottom end of Rectory, and Pies shop was opposite. Next to the Co-op was the butchers, ran at that time by Ray Doyle.

This may of been mentioned before on one of the DG threads but I remember there being a shop in one of the houses on Spindle Hillock.

The toffee shop on corner of Rectory road was a Mrs Dunn from Leyland green road.had two daughters the eldest was called Aileen can’t remember the other one’s name .

You're thinking of Mr White's post office Brian, but before he had it Mrs Compton who lived across from the parish hall ran the post office from her front room. I seem to remember that she was Mr White's mother in law.

you are right susea, Norman white did run the post office, and I remember the lady you mention who lived near Kevin Duffy.

Yes Mrs white was a lovely little white haired lady .telephone box in the front garden.

Brian Thelma dainty was me mam cousin she had shop in spindle hillock to Peter it s where Morris Clarke. Lives all the to you all let's hope it's better than 2020 but I will say this it's gone quick

When me & TUmtingle were young lads the first shop at the bottom of Rectory Rd was the Co-Op , next door was the Co=op butchers Managed by Billy Walker ray took over when Billy retierd, Next was Jack Pyes was Balls & accross the road was Charlie Shaws a cobbler then on the same side was Ormrods when they closed Tommy Evans moved in, then crossing the road a bit higher up was the Post Office run by Peter Cromton & his wife At the top of Rectory Road was Jimmy Shaws Then the Chippy. Dunns, Next forgot his name, then Malc & Margaret Cook , And thats it,,, But thats old D/OG.

Charlie Shaw lived next door to the shop (he may have had the shop at one time) he had a shed in his back yard, he had the Bungalow built that your school friend Ema lived in, Tommy Aspinall opened the chippy on the corner and he lived in Barnis house at the other end, it was Jimmy Sudworth that had the shop on the other corner
back to Alf Ball's shop across the road was Barton's he opened a chippy in his backyard side-on, to Rushton's shop that Tommy Evens took it on

Oh god Bri that's a shock, yes ste lived next door to us at 23 elm Ave I remember him being a good singer in church choir when I was a nipper, I remember parents Tommy and Flo I think ste had a sister who was eldest, I worked in hospital with steys son Chris until I left in 2017, and also remember carol who was my sister's best friend, so sad to hear that bad news Bri and thanks for keeping me informed.R.I.P. That is a shock for me. I was in the same class as Ste when I went to Rectory School.

his sister was younger than him & the youngest in the family . our james took up with her a few years ago but she died around 3yrs ago ,she was only 53 . ste had been fighting big C for a while & i think it finally got him.
