Wigan Casino - rock night.

The Casino is well known in Britain and also the USA for the Northern Soul Night, but there was a well attended rock night. What bands do you remember? Just a starter - String Driven Thing, Sassafras, Edgar Broughton.

Ariel Bender

I didn't realise that British Lions had Ariel Bender, etc. from Mott the Hoople.
Mick Bolton (from Wigan) was organist for Mott for a short while. Mick was cousin to Pat Keane (another musician, but more folk orientated) who I worked with for many years.
Small world...

Mick Bolton was formerly with Blind Eye, an impressive local band in the early 70s.

Casino rock was after my time, but I do remember Swinley Students Union club late 70's.  Hawkwind, Barclay James Harvest. etc.

Sorry,misunderstanding..Ariel. was not a Britsh Lion..It ws basicaly Buffin,Overend plus Medicine Head..and a vocalist called Ray Major

I used to go to the old Student's Union club. BJH played an amazing set there. When it closed Malc MacKinder set up the FAG at the Newtown British Legion; some good bands on there including Budgie. I remember Tony Iommi being there one night - I think he had come to watch Gravy Train. When the rock night there got too much for the older British Legion regulars, it closed and Malk moved the FAG to an upstairs room in the Swan and Railway. I think it may have been still operating when the Casino rock night started.

I don't know why I've not got onto this before,is the pat keane you mention from pemberton and had a brother Edward who played for orrell rugby team? If so I remember him from school days,he was at john rigby and had a mate called bruno. I've got a photo of him in mesnes park with some other
friends.
I also remember fag upstairs at swan and railway and bag upstairs at park hotel. I went there pre students union days. Wigan was a good place then,
I saw the photo of a vaccine queue at a chemist in mesnes street today and all the shops round it are
closed.the specials tune ghost town comes to mind.my son just wants the boozers to open so he can go for a pint and a laugh with his mates like we used to,come back market and park etc all is forgiven

Thanks Magic tree; I'm not sure is we are talking about the same Pat Keane. I know he had a brother but I thought his name might have been Phil (but I might be wrong). I only got to know Pat when I worked for the landscape section of the council in the mid 70s and Pat worked on the forestry section at the time. I don't know if he was from Pem but he settled in Abram. He was very much into folk music; his dad was a headmaster; his wife has Greek roots... he held a very high office in his work before he retired.
Nice to reminisce on the FAG.

Pat Keane lived in Howard Street, Pemberton.

His brother was Philip Keane.
