What was your first wage ?

Mine was 16 quid,August 15th 1975.Tipped up to my mum and got a fiver back to spend. Started "boarding" when i was 18 ,wage was 33 pounds gave her a tenner and kept the rest.Had to pay for my own clothes and dinners but still felt well off.Didn't realise at the time how lucky i was.

Starting wage in the pit in 1953 was £3-18s-4d. That was my first "proper" wage.
I did 2½ days at Newtown Co-op, & they still owe me £1-4s-6d for that, but I never went back after Wednesday

You wont believe this but i started work for Thomas Crompton in augst 1951 & my wage was 19 shillings & six pence old money, a tanner short of a pound,

£13.20, twelve months before Daikler at Old Boston. But that £13.20 in 1974, went a lot further than £86.00 in 1986, which was my last wage, for a full week, at Parkside Bottomless Moneypit.

I got £25 a week working at British Aerospace on a YTS scheme in 1984.
I was 16 and living at home,I gave my Mum £15 a week and had a tenner to spend.

I worked underground there from '79 until it closed.

£3 2sh 6d a week working for Gibson, Russell and Adler in King Street in 1966. I tipped it all up to my mum who gave me 10 bob back. She helped me out with new clothes though.

my first wage was a dollar an hour.

I got a massive £23.50 on the government YTS scheme 1981. After the compulsary six months of free labour my boss let me go and rolled the next one in!!

Mine was £28.50 on a YTS scheme and £5 extra for working on a Saturday morning in a local hardware shop.I had to give my mum £10 out of it though.I borrowed it back though on the weekend when i went out to the local pub.Yes i was an underage drinker, i did look older with all my gladrags on but im sure you all have done it.

We wouldn't get out of bed for some of those wages (an hour) now would we? I couldn't survive on less than three times my first week's wage an hour now, what with a mortgage and car to pay for. Makes you think how much inflation has risen over the years.

£25 on a YTS, I hated it!

I seem to remember working on the council with my Dad as a summer job, digging trenches, and doing about 80 hours a week to earn about 3 quid. That would have been 1970 though (aged 16) so my memories of wage levels don't tie in with other posts! I do remember a pint of bitter being 1s 11d though (10p) ! Amazingly I work in an office with 2 other managers (NHS) and our combined wages are nearly £100,000 a year!!! No wonder the NHS (aka Breat Britain) is broke!

I was apprenticed as a motor mechanic at a garage down Bickershaw lane for the princely sum of £1.10shillings and an extra half a crown if I worked on sat.morn, the garage is still there but it is now Heatons when I worked there it was c&c motors.I left after 6 months to go to the Wagon Works for double the money.

1953 £4 week

mine was 3 pounds working at a butchers shop on wallgate
W marsdens i was making pies
but i got lots of pies for free :)

On School Holidays at Christmas , I worked in Pendlebury's for 7 shillings per week with a 1/2penny per pound Commission 1938. they put me in the china and Glass dept and father said NO WAY think of the breakages she might have beacause you had to pay for them, so I went to Boots at the top of Standishgate for 7/6 shillings a week this time with a penny in the pound Commission, with my first wage my mother allowed me to spend it on a pair of evening shoes from Tipmpsons. Good old Days

I worked at Scott's slaughter-house when I left school in 1965. My first wage was £4 per week

£15.oo a week on Woolworths Record Department............£5 to Mum, My first weeks wages she let me keep ALL of it, and I bought a coat!

I worked my first week for nothing as I had to prove i was up to the job. second week my total take home was a fiver but I didnt get me mits on that cos me mam made me give me whole wage to me auntie who was childless. she wanted her to feel what it was like to have a child tip up. I didnt mind really tho, so it was three weeks before I got owt. Out of the fiver she give me a quid back, but I still had to buy me dinners out of it. That was 1972
