old st marys church ince
can any of you out there remember the old church of st marys in lower ince.i know it was just over the railway bridge going towards spring view.my husband remembers the church but we wondered if there was a grave yard at the church and if there was what happened to the graves when the church was demolished.come on incers and spring viewers get your thinking heads on

As far as I can remember there were no graves in the churchyard, in fact if I remember correctly there wasn't much of a churchyard.

Just thinking about it... Wigan Cemetery (Lower Ince) and Westwood Cemetery are just across the road.

i know it was abig church and one of my husbands friends said he remembered hidding behind a headstone when the police were after him when he was a young lad.

i was married at st.mary's 40 yrs ago last march.what year was it pulled down ?i know it's a while ago but not sure how long.

I too was married at St Mary's There was no graveyard.

St Mary's Church was demolished because of subsidence. The old Ince 6 Foot mineworkings run underneath it (apparently very near the surface) and the church was starting to crack and collapse.
Also (as with most Christian buildings of worship) due to a drop in the number of attendees it was uneconomical to have such a large church.

i was talking to someone who,s son was a choir boy at the church and he remembers that there were graves but not a grave yard like the others in ince.he said they could have been special graves maybe long standing members of the congregation.i thought of someone else who may be able to help so my husband will go to see them.
