John Taylor. Ashton in makerfield

We have recently inherited an unusual old bottle that has a marble stopper inside. and the writing says 'John Taylor
Ashton in makerfield'
Just wondering if anyone has any info and would it have been a beer/milk bottle etc and what year is it from as we cant find anything on the net!!!? thanks a lot

Probably a pop bottle if it had a marble stopper in it. The marble would have been a prized possession for the kids at the time.

What colour is the bottle? is there not a year on the bottle anywhere?

Its a clear bottle it says n & co on the bottom and has the number 3184.

Keep it in good condition, it is worth something now. Any old bottles are. and more so if they have the marble in.

We would never sell it! We just want to know about its history!!

It is called a "Codds Bottle" so called because the inventor of the marble stopper system of sealing the bottle. Was invented by a Hiram Codd. Some rare coloured ones can be quite valuable. However run of the mill clear bottles without any picture decoration are only worth a couple of pounds. When you go 'bottle digging' you find a lot with the necks broken. Broken at the time, by kids who wanted the marble stopper.
