Grapes hotel

just been looking at pics of old pubs and my other half wants to know where the grapes hotel wallgate was situated.we can't think of anywhere on wallgate it could've been.

On the right going down towards Miry lane:


There was the Grapes, The queens & on the corner of Miry Lane, the New Star(?)

i used to go in there for my dinner when i worked down wallgate.
when they knocked it down we went to the honeysuckle

What year did they knock em down,
me and the wife loved the grapes and star.

While we're on about Wallgate pubs, on the other side from the bridge down, starting with the Wheatsheaf, can anybody list the pubs down to the pier

The golden lion and the Bridgwater were seperated by Peters wood yard.

I remember going in the Bankes Arms about
1970 which I think was the next one down
from the Wheatsheaf and also I seem to
recall a Red Lion across from the New Star
although could only legally enter the
premises in 1971!

I think you mean The Golden Lion rio caroni.

Not forgetting the Trencherfield.
The Golden Lion was the other side of the bridge next to the Raven.

Usually when you ask, the Bankes Arms is missed
I always knew the Queens as "the pillars"

You must have been right rio caroni I always get mixed up with the two lion pubs one before bridge one after.Cant remember The Trencherfield. But being near mill one would assume you are right Art.

It was about where Middleton & Woods is now. Right next to the mill with some big advertising hoardings alongside.
Ive had a pint or two in there with a Mr W Boston & friends..

Aaah the owd Wallgate area, knew it well. Sad it's all gone.

The Grapes was at the top of Clayton Street where Gordon's second hand car sales pitch is now. It was demolished about the time that Wallgate became a dual carriageway and Gordon Ford's had their new showroom built to replace the one at the top of Miry Lane.
Although not on Wallgate I did frequent the Buck 'ith Vine down Clayton Street run by Ellen Picton, a true traditional boozer.

T'Buck in't Vine, was commonly known as............Wait for it:

"The Whitewash"
