LONGNECK

Does anyone know why the Anderton Arms was called The Longneck?
My Nanna used to work there years ago and even she doesnt know why (or shes not saying!!)

Dont know if is true or not but I was told by an old man years ago that the original name was the swan

i was asked this question by aitch last night in the club. i asked about and got told it was because someone hung themselves there a long time ago dunno how true that is though

I suppose its one we'll never know!!
The dictionary says the meaning of "longneck" is "A glass beer bottle with an elongated neck". Which maybe could be the reason of its name - if it specialised in that type of bottle years ago??

i will ask in the club ,some of the older men might be able to tell me

Wendy,give me the location,if its the same Anderton Arms as I knew,my eldest sister may know the answer,she into her eighties and claims there's very little she doesn't know about.Her first husband worked for the Lancashire Evening Post in Wigan in the '50s and '60s,he's no longer with us so we can't ask him but sis once lived in Scholes and at one time ran a pub,don't where because I'd emigrated by then.

Here's an after thought,not really to do with your query but just to say here in Oz all 760ml and 800ml beer bottles are referred to as longnecks and 350ml and 375ml ones are called stubbies.

The Longneck or Anderton Arms to give it its real name is in Ince Green Lane opposite St Williams school

Aitch the Anderton Arms I knew is the one in Euxton on Wigan Road.I did find the one in Ince on Google,there is a very good photograph but that particular site didn't give much info.

Went through euxton today aussie roy but didnt see any anderton arms so where is it situated

Aitch,it's on the A49 between Balshaw and Euxton Lanes,just before you get to The Bay Horse. Down Balshaw Lane there's another pub that I know the Talbot Arms,and on probably the first time I ever went there was Christmas eve,1961,after my mate and I arrived on our way to the dance at Highways Hostel.Unfortunately we had both drunk to excess,after all it was the festive season and it was too much for my mate so he never went to the dance and went home via the muddy fields instead.Against the odds I did make it the event but was in no condition to dance and when it was time to go home I asked a friend of my brother for a lift.Nine of us climbed into an old Austin 7 and I was dropped off about half a mile from home and it wasn't 'til the following morning that I discovered I'd lost my raincoat.To cut a long story short I was over in UK for a holiday in '96 and we stayed with my sister in Euxton for a couple of nights so of course went in the Talbot and I told them about Dec.'61 and I asked if anybody had handed my mac' in,needless to say I got some strange looks.

I was also told the same tale as mandie. The longneck got its name because the landlord hung himself in the cellar! Might be worth a bit of research this one.

The only pub that I can recall that had a landlord who hung himself in Ince was the Crown on manchester Road, on the spot where Vartys undertakers now stands

a few people told me the same tale about someone being hung, dunno if it was the landlord or not or where in the pub it happened .i will keep asking in the club

Mandie which pub are you on about ,I know the one about the crown is true because I lived in the street facing at the time ,I dont want to name him because he still has family living in the area

im on about the anderton arms cos i dont know the crown?im only going off wot chaps in club are telling me like i said im not sure
