Almost free day out???

Started by: Anne (4385)

As said on “Going places thread” myself and friends intention was to go to Buxton on Friday 20th.
Met at Wigan NW but being a little late decided not to book at NW and pay the extra on the connecting train. Boarded train with our bus/train pass to Manchester Piccadilly, no one came to check tickets. Arriving Piccadilly we had to show our passes at the platform exit. Boarded connection to Buxton, again no ticket check so were unable to pay as expected. Thought we could pay on arrival in Buxton, station deserted of staff even ticket office closed. Off we went for our visit to antiques fair.
On return was able to book a single for the portion of the journey not covered by bus pass, a grand total of £7-20 for the whole journey. Could not believe how lax things were.

Anne,

All depends on the day and which guard is doing their job correctly.

Prior to the lockdown, I travelled on trains all over Greater Manchester and beyond and on some occasions, I have gone from Wigan as far as New Mills, Edale and Clitheroe and returned to Wigan and even Chorley without anyone checking my ticket, but on other occasions, I have my ticket checked on every train I have been on.

Anne if you had gone on the bus from Buxton to Disley it wouldn't have cost you anything
